Renault FT, commonly known as FT-17, were Polish*
main tanks in the 1920s, serving until 1939. *
*
120 Renault FT tanks were given by France in 1919,*
making Poland 4th biggest tank power.*
They fought in Polish-Soviet war in 1919-1920. With*
further acquisitions, Poland had 174 FT tanks in*
early 1930s. Most were armed with short 37mm SA-18*
guns, the rest had 7.92mm wz.25 Hotchkiss MG.*
*
In 1939 Poland had 102 FT tanks, including training*
ones. They had not much combat value by then.*
45 were used in three companies (111, 112, 113).*
Latter two were used in defence of Brzesc fortress*
(Brest-on-the-Bug), among others, blocking its gate.*
20 tanks were used on railway chassis as armoured*
draisines of Polish armoured trains - they could*
also fight on the ground. Some other FT tanks*
were used in improvised units.*
*
Renault FT were used again by Polish troops in 1940*
in France, for training only. *
