The task of defending the Kamina base which sported two of the longest runways in the whole of Africa and which was designed and built by the Belgians to house 60000 people, befell a heavily reduced Irish UN battallion which had been reinforced by the reduced Swedish UN "Kamina" Company, recently transferred from Ghaza.*
*
The base was in fact two bases, one air base and one military base, 10 kilometres apart which, needless to say, added to the problems.*
*
The commander of the Irish UN battallion ordered his battallion to take up defensive postions in and around the airbase and tasked Major Fred Lundqvist with his Swedish company of 100 men to defend the armybase.*
*
This was not an easy task since the army base was the closest to the HQ of the Gendarms in the city of Kamina, located only 20 kilometres away. *
*
Near the western entrance to the armybase, which was the closest to the city of Kamina, the UN had set up a checkpoint which consisted of a roadblock and a handfull men.*
*
When the fighting erupted in Elizabethville on September 13, Major Lundqvist reinforced the checkpoint with one platoon consisting of 23 men under the command of Lieutenant Friman.*
*
The attack came early on the morning of September 14 and took the Swedish defenders by surprise. It started with a fierce mortar bombardment of the base itself while the attacking Gendarms, totalling two armoured cars and two companies of infantry, moved forward towards the checkpoint.*
*
Unable to move the rest of his company in support of the platoon at the checkpoint as long as the mortars were firing, Major Fred Lundqvist could do nothing but wait. *
*
Thus it was up to the platoon commanded by Lieutenant Friman to hold off the attack. Their weapons; 1 GRG, 1 Machinegun, 20 Submachineguns and 23 grimfaced men.*
*
Victory conditions: There is only one real option available to the defenders. Hold at all cost. Reinforcements will arrive once the mortars stop firing.*
*
Notes: *
If played against the AI, the human player should play the UN side.*
*
I have tried to be as historically accurate as possible in this scenario, but since I was unable to obtain a map of the base I have had to use written sources and my imagination in designing the scenario.*
All information regarding the events have been taken from the book "Katanga-Svensk FN-trupp i Kongo 1961-62" by Jonas Waern and as far as I know only published in Swedish*
*
I have tried to simulate the mortars keeping the rest of the company pinned down by adding them as reinforcements. This was the only way I could think of to simulate it.*
What really happened during the battle was that the Swedish UN soldiers in Friman's Platoon took out the AC's and then blew up an ammunitiontruck which made the attackers retreat.*
However since this was impossible to replicate in the scenario (The AI used the ammotruck like a ram, mimmicking the attack on the US base in the movie "Full Metal Jacket") I chose to give the Gendarm forces very low morale which should make them brake easily.*
I also had to give the reinforcements APC's so that they would stand a chance to get to the checkpoint. In the real fight they did not have that leisure.
Oh, and this is my first scenraio so please be kind ;) Eventhough I wouldn't mind constructive critisism*
