Scenario description: There is a common myth in the west that World War II in Europe ended on May 8, 1945.*
*
This myth ignores the subsequent large-scale fighting around Prague and countless smaller subsequent actions in eastern and southeastern Europe. In truth, one of the largely unknown consequences of the eastern front was that it ignited many ethnic conflicts which had smouldered for centuries.*
*
This was particularly true of the Ukraine. The Ukrains'ka Povstans'ka Armiia (UPA) was a Ukrainian partisan group that had fought against the Germans, the Soviets, the Poles, and the Czechs at various times during and after World War II.*
*
They were particularly active in southern Poland and were implicated in the massacres of Polish villagers. The activity of the UPA reached a peak in March, 1947, with the ambush and killing of Polish general Karol Swierczewski, who was the Polish deputy minister of defense.*
*
The Polish reaction was swift and ruthless, engaging in anti-partisan operations against the UPA and unleashing "Operation Vistula", a forced deportation of Ukrainians from southeast Poland. The Polish military response included both the LWP (Ludowe Wojsko Polskie - Polish People's Army) and the hated Urzad Bezpieczenstwa (UB), the Polish state security forces.*
*
Overall, by 1950, the UPA had been defeated in Poland and the USSR. This scenario depicts a Polish advance against UPA partisans in the wake of General Swierczewski's murder.*
*
Note: If played against the AI, the human player should play the Player 1 Polish side.*
