Warthe Crossing*
*
Date: September 5, 1939 *
*
Battle Location: Mnichow, Poland*
*
Battle Type: Germany assault vs Poland defend*
*
Description: By September 4, the 10. Infanterie-Division reached the Warthe river and found a fortified slope on the opposite river bank. The slope was man made, originally designed to protect against flooding, it had been augmented by bunker positions to protect against another kind of invasion.*
*
Observing the area from the high ground near Dzigorzew village, the Oberst commanding Infanterie Regiment 41 decided that a night attack was the only course of action that offered a reasonable chance of success as the ground was largely devoid of cover.*
*
The assignment to breach the bunker line and establish a bridgehead by capturing the village of Mnichow fell on the troops of III/Infanterie Regiment 41, reinforced by engineers of Pionier Battalion 10. The first company crossed the river in the dark just after 1930 hours. At first the bunkers lay silent, then suddenly the defenders opened up a withering fire on the advancing Germans.*

Notes: If played against the AI the human player should take the German side.*
