RACE TO TEHERAN*
*
US ARMY vs Iran*
*
September-November 2009*
*
*
Background:*
*
Following the 2008 US presidential elections and the Republican candidate victory, the US sets up an ambitious agenda for its dealings with Iran.*
*
A massive propaganda campaign highlighting Iranian support of Shiite insurgent groups in Iraq and Irans attempts at building nuclear weapons and the threat this poses against Israel convince large portions of the American public that it is time for the gloves to come off.*
*
Most of the western powers, especially the Europeans, remain sceptical about the US initiative, only the leadership of Britain and Australia show what can be described as lukewarm enthusiasm.*
*
Then, with little warning, the set up changes itself. Following elections in Iran civil unrest erupts as the followers of a losing candidate refuse to acknowledge the election result. Pressured from both outside and now internally the Iranian leadership falls back on force to deal with the situation - a massacre of protesters takes place in Teheran.*
*
For the hawks in Washington no better evidence for the necessity of an intervention could have been produced.*
