Well, it appears we are down again today so I guess the loose cable wasn't the problem.

Re: PBW status

Ok, well bad news. I'm really, really stupid. I unplugged the wireless access point and the router at the same time. They have the same sized plug, but unfortunatly they have different voltages on those adapters. My wireless access point that is used to 5v didn't like 9v. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

Access point is toast. No wireless means no connection to the PBW server.

I'm getting a new access point tommorow. Truth be told I was planning on getting a new one anyway. The current one was pretty old. Server should be back up tommorow evening sometime.

In case anyone is wondering, I'm following my standard procedure for extended outages here. I've currently got the server shut off, so no turn processing will occur. I will disable auto processing once I get the network back up and leave it disabled for a couple days to allow people to get caught up on their games.

Re: PBW status

Ok, the server is back up and on the network. During all the switching things around I've ended up with a new IP address. The request has been made to update the DNS for the seiv.pbw.cc URL. It may take a few hours to percolate through the system. In the mean time you should be able to reach the PBW site directly at http://69.81.92.3. Someone let me know if that doesn't work, please. Once the DNS updates you can go back to using the pbw.cc address.

Again, I'm leaving auto processing off for a couple days. If all turns are uploaded your turn will process, or the game owner can manually force a turn and it will run. But they won't run simply due to reaching their turn time limit.

Re: PBW status

Server is back up and running and the DNS is all updated, so you should be able to reach the site with the normal pbw.cc address.

We had another outage overnight which was more of the same problem I've been having with my isp connection, nothing to do with the new network hardware installed.

I've loaded a script on the server which checks periodically for connection loss and attempts to reset the modem if needed. This should greatly improve the reliability of the site. If you can't reach the site give it about 5 minutes and try again. If you still can't reach it then something else has happened that a simple reset won't fix, or my script isn't working.

No, it's fine. I was testing the script out. Since I put the script on there this morning it hadn't gone out once and I wanted to make sure that the script could actually handle an outage so I put the modem in standby. The script worked fine. So I think we are going to be ok.

Nope, you are correct. I'm not sure why but it appears something changed with the email host that I wasn't made aware of. I've made the necessary correction now though and you should be getting emails again.

Cool, Big G! Glad I didn't send out a false alarm. Surprising how little things like that can get past you.

And for some reason, this leads me to think about how I'm the designated "bleeding edge" lead on checking out Vista for our organization. UGH! Vista! So many quirks!

We seem to be having some DNS problems this morning. The site is up and yo ucan reach it directly at the IP addres, just not at the URL. Also seems to be affecting out email. Or that's a separate problem. Not sure.

Yes, Autoprocessing is still off. I was going to turn it back on today and this DNS problem started. The DNS issue appears to be all cleared up now. I'll probably turn auto processing back on tomorrow if there are no other problems.

I think there is something wrong. I am trying to access PBW at work and it won't accept the password I have had for the last 5 years. I asked for the password and it is right, but no matter how many times I try it won't accept it.

Re: PBW status

I have added support for SE5 ver 1.25, including support for Balance mod ver 1.03, Golden Eclipse Mod ver 1.0 Beta, and Gritty Galaxy Public Mod beta. I haven't tested the Golden Eclipse and Gritty mods to verify they work with ver 1.25, these are the same versions of the mods that were available with 1.20.

Uprgading an exsisting stock games from 1.20 to 1.25 should work fine. There may be issues with mod games, consult the mod creator for more specific information in that regard.

There is still no way currently to upgrade a game on PBW from an older to a more recent version of a mod. For SE5 there is only one version of the mod pn PBW per version of SE5. In Se5 there is still no way to change the game type folder name being used in the game, so the only way to change the mod for a game is to change the files in the game type folder. Doing so on PBW will change the files for every game usign that mod. If you are playing an existing game of 1.20 with balance mod ver 1.01 and want to upgrade it to 1.25 you will have to upgrade to 1.25 with balance mod 1.03. There are reports that this is a problem. If you want to upgrade to 1.25 but remain on 1.01 of the mod you'll have to have the game owner run the turns offline.

Re: PBW status

Ok, well it was more than just a minor glitch. I got home and the server was down hard and would not boot up at all. Fortunatly I had already got the RAM for the new server. I pulled the HDD out of the down server and out it in the new server and we are back up and running. I didn't get to do all the upgrade work I had planned, but the backup server did it's job.

I'll need to do some troubleshooting work to figure out why the server died. Not sure if it's a power supply problem or something on the motherboard.

Please report any problems.

The PBW server is up, but the isp has reset our IP address. We are contacting the DNS provider to get the pbw.cc URL updated. In the mean time, you should be able to reach the site at http://69.81.92.82

While it is true that gmail often views PBW mail as spam, there does appear to be a problem with sending any emails right now. I think it's related to the IP change. My guess is the server we use for emails has a filter that only accepts emails from certain IP's. I'm investigating further. The server is recieving emails ok, it's only sending that seems to be not functioning.

Is there any news as to when DNS name and email service will work again?

capnq March 19th, 2007 12:33 AM

Re: PBW status

For the DNS change, it's just a matter of the update percolating through the network; we have no control over how long that may take. (Although I'm surprised it hasn't sorted by now; I don't recall previous changes taking this long.)

I'm not one of the people working on the e-mail problem, so I can't give an estimate for that.

Sorry about the delay in getting the DNS updated. The problem is I have not been able to make contact with the Admiral. I don't have access to the DNS people myself, the URL is still registered by him. Apparently he's on vacation or something as he hasn't responded to emails.
