More silly rookie Q's, CBM and maps

Hi Guys

A couple of questions,

1) Being rather new to this game and trying to learn fast, what is CBM? How does it work and how do I add it?

2) Maps, the game comes stock with only a few. How/Where can I get more (beyond randomizing) and how do I down load them?

Thanks in advance

F

1) CBM is Conceptual Balance Mod. Basically, the Illwinter developers (both of them) did not make gameplay balance a priority. Thus in MP, there are a lot of units, pretenders, and spells that do not make much sense to buy or use. CBM, developed by quantum mechanic (sp?) attempts to make a bunch of stuff otherwise not useful, useful. The number of chances is absolutely enormous and makes the game close to unrecognizable from "vanilla" Dominions 3. However, it is popular for MP.

2) As you may have noticed, there is a sub forum dedicated to mods and maps. Most mods and maps are uploaded onto the forum and made available for download there. Or, go to www.llamaserver.net and click on Maps and Mod Browser. This will give descriptions and images and provide links to where the mod or map can be downloaded from the forum.

To make things a little more newbie-friendly:D

This subforum contains most of the mods and maps; there are also two stickies with a list of them, but they might not be always up to date. Your downloads will be either .zip or .rar files: you can use the basic windows unpackager for .zip files, but you'll need WinRar for the .rar.

Once you have the file, you have to extract mods into the "mods" subfolder of your dominions installation, and maps in the "maps" subfolder. Make sure that you actually extract the files directly in the mods/maps folder, without creating an additional subfolder, or the game won't recognize it.

Once you're done, you should find the maps available when starting a new game, and you can enable the various mods by going into options/mods inside the game:)

Just to give a free alternative to WinRAR (especially for non-Windows users) you might try 7-Zip which can de-compress .rar files. Can't create them, though...
