Quick Question:
 
Hey folks,

I've recently gotten back into SE4 and I'm piddling with mod of my own (based heavily on Proportions and Devnull).

Anyways, I have a ton of shipsets laying around and I'm slowing converting them to my mod. But until I get them converted, is there a way to leave in the base /Pictures/Races folder (so human players can select them), but not have the AI pick them for random generation? I seem to recall setting its 'Personality Group' to 0 as having helped in the past, but now the AI is still selecting them.

Anyone know a quick fix for this?

Just make the generic AI files work, and let the unmodded races fall back on that.

Be sure not to include the bitmaps in your mod, since they will cause massive unnessesary bloat. You don't want a download that is 1 meg worth of mod, and 20 megs worth of shipsets that people already have and that you may not have permission to redistribute.

Se4 will look for any missing AI files and bitmaps in the generic and stock folders, so don't worry about missing files. Just be sure the generic race AI works http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Or, you can get the best of both worlds and distribute two versions of the mod, one with the bitmaps and one without it. Not everyone downloads every shipset under the sun. Permission to use other's work for your own distributed works is always good, of course. For personal use, it doesn't matter, of course, since you have permission to use it for your own purposes simply by the fact that it was made publically and freely available on the internet.

Thanx guys. I'll just update the default AI then.

I dont intend to release the mod anyways as its really nothing special and is really just a modified version of other folks' mods. So its pretty much just for me and any of my group that I can get back into SE4.

Lots of mods borrow from other mods. Just be sure to name the mods you took inspiration/other stuff from in the Modinfo file, then release the mod. I gather that Pointer borrows a lot from other mods.
