Re: Check it out!

Welcome everyone interested in Salvo!

This is just a brief introduction and a disclaimer. <Don’t-ya-love-it?>

Greetings – I’m the developer for Salvo and I guess that makes me the front line defense for this forum. So, for now I’ll be doing my best to keep an eye on things here. The disclaimer is that something is taking up a lot of my time lately, hummmm - I seem real busy – Oh yea! - I’m trying to wrap-up Salvo. So, I’ll hit this forum as often as I can to give you reports on the exact hour’s situation and to answer questions about the game. But – I can only say that this is secondary to my current focus in life.

Thanks for dropping in!

I read something of what the game includes. In particular, the campaign aspect where you command a fleet through a campaign period.

Are there also scenarios where you command individual ships through a smaller campaign or mission? If so, would the captain be advanced in rank depending on his successes? And I guess what I'm really asking is, is there a campaign included that is similar to what had in Talensoft's Age of Sail?

Rick:

Some aspects of Salvo’s campaign structure are similar to that, but some are quite different. Basically, Salvo’s campaign system works by letting you make strategic choices following each campaign battle. The choice can be for one ship, or for your entire navy – depending on the context of the scenario. The quality and moral of your ships will improve as you ‘promote’ them or as they gain experience, but there is no solid conceptualization of yourself as the captain of one of the ships.

There are several campaigns that start out with single ships and remain small throughout, but the advancement of rank and other ‘character’ aspects are a little abstracted or purely in the accompanying material that goes with the campaign. Success in a battle is rewarded, but winning an entire campaign will also require making the right choices.

There will be at least one campaign in the demo, as well as a campaign tutorial. Chances are the campaign tutorial will answer your questions, so please hold on for the demo, and let em know what you think.

I already asked that in another thread actully and the answer was no http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif but hopefully he will patch it often enough that there will be enough new content including multiplayer which is supposed to be patched into the game after release.

Hi, I was just looking @ the screenshots for the game (http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Sprue/Salvo/3.htm) is the game 600x800 only ?

Will there be any sound effects/ music in the game?

Greycloud :

Screen Size
Salvo’s native screen size is 800 x 600, for windowed modes, with the additional option of 1024 x 768. But the game operates at any screen size when it is in full screen mode. I have not tried any of the wacky modes you can get in HDTV monitors and tablet computers set to ‘vertical’ mode but that is something that will come up as the demo gets a little more exposure to other systems. ITMT maybe I’ll fool around with it – but maybe not time-is-tight.

Sound
There is no music, but there is sound: A looping wave sound indicating the current wind speed, and effects sound for combat. All sounds are adjustable and turn-off-able.
