British Naval gun support 1945-1982
 

British Battleship support was available until 1959.

14 inch guns on four King George V class ships until 1956/57. 15 inch guns on HMS Vanguard until 1959, she was scrapped in 1960. (HMS Nelson and Rodney with 16 inch guns were decommissioned in 1947).

8 inch gun heavy cruiser support was available until HMS Devonshire was sold off in 1954/55

6 inch support was available until 1979, and, had the Falklands War lasted longer both HMS Tiger and HMS Blake were being prepared for further service from reserve in 1982. Both were found in good condition and there was lots of 6 inch ammo available. By then both these light Cruisers had two automatic 6 inch guns (plus two auto 3.5 inch guns).

These two ships also had large flight decks and hangers that could hold 4 x Sea King Helicopters and Harriers could also use them for re-fueling, etc.

I was called away for the "family duties" of the day on my last post. For Peru my item will be an ADD for next year as it's not in the current OOB. Would like to submit with an actual ship's picture since the ships and gun size (BOFORS 15.2 cm/53 (6") Model 1942.) were limited to this class only during the full time that they were available from 1973 - present. What's also interesting is these guns could also fulfill an AA role as well up to 50,000ft which seems impressive for a gun of that size and of that period. The current ship (BAP Almirante Grau (ex-De Ruyter) CLM-81) mounts a total of 8 guns in 4x2 turrets.

Sorry for the delay but, it's the last of her kind still operating in the world. Hopefully it'll find a nice "museum home" when her time is up.

HMS Belfast with 12 x 6 inch guns was operational until 1963 and in reserve until 1967. She is now a museum ship on the Thames in London.

Belfast could fire up to 96 6inch shells a minute from her four triple turrets, each gun firing up to eight times a minute.

The later Tiger class ships could fire up to 20 rounds a minute from each automatic 6 inch gun.

Which would make a mess of (some say improve) the London Gateway motorway service station at Scratchwood. The forward-facing guns of HMS Belfast are famously permanently positioned to score a direct hit on the services... :p

With regard to the 9 X 16 inch guns carried on HMS Nelson and Rodney, it should be noted that HMS Rodney played a major part in the destruction of the German battleship Bismarck. A recent underwater expedition revealed extensive damage to Bismark from 16 in gun fire (as well as 14 inch gun fire from KGV).

Later Nelson and Rodney provided effective Naval Gun Fire Support during and after the D-Day Landings.
