Mercenary: Quick Question

I've sort of gathered that I can't take anything anyway from a hired mercenary, and if I give him anything he then hangs onto it forever (presumably going with him if a new owner hires him).

Quick Question: If I have him at a lab, and if I ask him to forge something, does the object go into my treasury for use elsewhere, or does he get it himself (and I can't have it)? Thanks.

It goes into your lab. You can assign it freely to whatever commander you want to.

However, if you assign it to the mercenary, you aren't getting it back while the mercenary is still alive.

one fun tactic is to give "bad" artifacts to mercenaries, like the "Snake Bladder Stick" to the mercenary so the next that hire it will receive the bad effects...

Quick thought, any1 tried to feed bad items for enemy heroes by sending own champion on suicide mission and praying enemy champ will pick the item up from the battle field?

Thank you. Also:

a. I can get him to cast ritual spells; but I believe that uses my gems from my lab, not the ones he's carrying ('coz that how it always works) ?

b. Does he ever auto-replenish his gems? Worse, does he help himself out of my coffers (if he's at a lab), and I can't get them back!?

I'm trying to use his gems. I guess just by giving him battle-casting orders, and then only if he feels like it?

a. He uses your gems for rituals.

b. He doesn't autoreplenish his gems unless he has an artifact that replenishes gems. He won't "take" your gems if he is at a lab.

c. You can use his gems in combat by scripting him in a manner that he would use gems, or by chance he can cast a spell off script that requires gems.

Phew! I just suddenly thought of that one as I was typing. Mighty kind of him.

Sometimes i sent disposable commanders to the arena with cursed itens and "bad" artifacts and the AI got it...

Just remember that itens that eventually cause the commander to change form (like the one that transforms it in a werewolf) probably do not work in pretenders...

The snake bladder stick can be a lot of fun in the right hands. It certainly isn't universally bad, it simply has to be used carefully, such as with poison immune thugs that are kept well away from most troops. Toss these in along with a column of raised skeletons, and the area turns that much nastier.
