Back in the saddle

We didn't have a Blackburn Skua in the Brit WW2 OOB

I needed to see if I could still build an icon from scratch

I think so....

A bit more detail refinement added (x4 normal) (4-12-2025)

Re: Back in the saddle

Nice to see you back in business of icon creation

If you build a Blackburn Skua icon don't forgot about Blackburn Roc https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackburn_Roc The same aircraft but only armed with four MG's in tower. Used in pre-war times on aircraft carriers in silver colours then like Skua in Norwegian Campaign then Dunkirk evacuation and last time during operation Ariel in August 1940 during evacuation of soldiers from western France ports. Maybe for straffing because this aircraft were used as escort fighters for Skua's.

I considered adding it and I may still add it as it is dead simple to do BUT.....

Quote:

The type operated briefly in small numbers from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. During the Norwegian campaign of 1940, 801 Squadron brought three of the turret-fighters aboard along with its Blackburn B-24 Skuas although they were little used due to their low performance and poorer endurance.

Blackburn B-25 Rocs also took part in operations from airfields on the south coast of England during the Dunkirk evacuations and it was during this period that the type scored its first and only air-to-air kill, shooting down a Ju88 over Ostende.

However, the type’s poor performance and lack of forward-firing armament meant that it was not effective in air combat and consequently the Blackburn B-25 Roc saw only a few months of operational service.
4/39 - 11/40 is being generous

Re: Back in the saddle

Very cool! Does that mean there will be another patch after all? If so, I should really get back to campaign design...

Re: Back in the saddle

Have you thought about doing a Blackburn Roc in Finnish Markings?

They almost made it there...;)

Finish aircrafts were just if and not used in Finland actually. But here is really something interesting what may be used as an ICON in our game. Blackburn Roc as a real static AA bunker on airfields in England during Sea Lion invasion to support airfields during RAF defence against air landings. According to description
they were used in Eastleigh Southampton airport and probably in other places. Here whole story Use of Rocs as "Machine Gun Posts" https://dingeraviation.net/skuaroc/blackburn_roc.htm

Here Hawker Henley also with AA defence on RAF airfield
