Q & A AI

I have seen the AI when Building ships will build the SAME ship with all the same comps just name it different...Is this right?

The AIs build Attack Ships and Defense Ships, often with identical designs. It uses these 2 types of ships in vastly different roles. Attack Ships are used to attack other empires and to explore the galaxy. Defense ships are used for... umm... I don't really know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Maybe roles such as planetary defense and intercepting enemy ships that enter their space?

I don't know about "right", but it is normal. The AI redoes all of its designs every 10 turns, and when it does, it assigns them new names. If there has been no technology change that impacts that particular design then the two ships will be identical.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">And this is the most annoing: AI also tries to refit ships to a "new" design. Since designs are identical, retrofit fails and ship just sit on the planet doing nothing. Next turn, and then another turn... When I test AI on auto run, I had ships going this cycle for dozens of turns.

It must be fixed. Let's re-design procedure to assign new ship' design name and escape the cycle when it hapens. It should slightly improve AI performance.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I haven't seen it do that as much as it used to, so maybe it is getting a little better. The thing that drives me nuts, though is when propulsion advances from, say, level 1 to level 2. The AI starts refitting ships to the new engines which give no benefit at all to it (other than perhaps a very small maintenance benefit) since speed does not increase. It's especially bad when it holds up a loaded colonizer for a couple of turns to refit its engines. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...s/rolleyes.gif
