Actually the mod is for SPWW2. It just changes the rank abbreviations from Maj. to Major, Cpt. to Captain, Cpl to Corporal, Pvt. to Private etc. for about 4 nations
In MBT at least one of those...

I prefer the first graphic.
The game does add a small shadow to the southwest of the units.
You could try adding a black border/shadow to only the SW of the men, this would emphasize the shadow...
