Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

I think time has a way of warping memories, X-Com is still one of my favorite games of all time and nothing in that vein has ever equaled it (Chaos Gate was close but not quite) but that doesn't mean...

Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

I've played many of them myself and thought it was a fairly good history for the time frame it covered - couldn't really find anything comparable for 2002 - Present. But this covered some:

With SL rekindling my interest in the genre I just wanted to share this article I found in my surfing that might be of interest to this group:

history of space empire games 1980-2002...

Re: Ship Talk

I'll start by saying again that I certainly both understand and appreciate the need to balance things for the sake of game play/fun/entertainment and certainly KISS rules play a part of that.

But...

Re: Ship Talk

As simple as it was - anyone who remembers the classic arcade game Asteroids - I think did a fair representation of 2D space movement. Adding weapons mounted in places other then just the "front"...

Re: Planets and Resources

I think in order to avoid being bogged down in any single aspect of a 4X game certain liberties will have to be taken to make the game fun. In that respect I actually like the SE4/5 model of only...

Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

I agree with the MP aspect and if the game is to work for PBEM, then having the autoresolution done Dominions 3 style would be the best option.[/QUOTE]

Re: Ship Talk

I would not want to sacrifice game play for realism but I think in ship design most games (certainly SE4 and 5) depict engines at one end only but I think maneuvering thrusters not at that end should...

Re: Ship Talk

 Cartesian-vector-based (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system) ...so the Cartesian coordinate plane can still be done in hexes RIGHT? :D

I'm afraid I'm not familiar...

Re: Ship Talk

I think another applicable example of firing arcs as well as movement is from The War Engine (http://www.matrixgames.com/products/356/details/The.War.Engine) which actually has its roots here at...

Re: Planets and Resources

True enough - as long as the setup options allow me to configure the game to be played the right way I'm ok with it... ;)

Re: Planets and Resources

I think there should be fewer Earth or otherwise species ideal planets and more emphasis placed on developing smaller bodies like moons and asteroids etc. Both strategically/logistically and from a...

Re: Ship Talk

I agree a full 3D environment has great application in any space game but for the sake of playability and mod-ability if SL is to be 2d I was thinking more isometric tile sets with an oversimplified...

Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

I think it is always a tough one to balance as 4X games attract Grognards I think. In both SE4 and 5 I always felt I spent way too much time managing my empire in non fun ways and in this respect I...

Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

While I'm wishing for random stuff how about the implementation of a simplified Z axis for the tactical portion of the game? More for the sake of game play than realism - if SL is to be 2d I'm...

Re: Welcome Star Legacy Development Group!

I agree. RTS combat is not the way to go for a serious 4X game. I think the best although I would not call it a compromise is the "WEGO" system as found in the Combat Mission games. ...

Re: Ship Talk

Ship design was always my favorite element of the SE series. I probably spent more time tweaking ship designs and studying the weapons tables in the SE5 ship simulator then I spent playing the...

Don't make any special effort on my account but would be curious to know. Always kind of nice I think to see the history/evolution of a game the way http://www.malfador.com/ has the old Space...
