Actually, the population of a planet can be a pretty substantial bonus to construction rate. Here are the numbers (population figures are minimums for that bonus level):

1 important clarification, though. Unlike satellites, once you launch the mines (from a planet or ship or base or whatever), they cannot be recovered by any means. They can be self-destructed, though.

exactly.
Also #4 - If you failed to sweep all the mines, but your ships survive the remaining mines, then battle will ensue between your wounded fleet and the enemy ships.

I think in the Gold release they've fixed it so when a cloaked minesweeper enters a mine field, it automatically decloaks to sweep.

The owner of a planet doesn't matter, it is the population of the planet.
If you did gift each other planets, you would still have to shuttle the correct-breathing population to the planets.

One way I know for SURE would work is to have the units in the cargo of a ship, and trade the ship.
