Anyone can detect demolitions, but engineers are better at it and stationary troops can detect better as they check around thier location. Just like mines.

The smoke mortar is counted as 1 or 2 S/D depending on the whims of the OOB designer.

If the UK Grant has a smoke mortar then it may well need a point or 2 of S/D added then.
