Re: Armour ratings

There's a simple penetration calculator at this location (http://www.irational.org/tttp/TTTP/idiots/jv_armpn.html), but this is primarily for determining armor penetration at two periodic ranges and...

Re: OT- Recoiless Rifle

That's the one, thanks thatguy96. Another note on rockets, note that stub-rail mounted rockets like HVARs impart very little force on the launcher mechanism, hence they could be mounted in pairs...

Re: Laser ordinance guidance /designation from ground?

I see what you mean, RAEME_Dave, make the firing unit off-map, and use the FO unit to guide the round. SP3 didn't have off-map artillery other than naval and fixed wing air, and I had difficulty...

Re: OT- Recoiless Rifle

I concur, a rocket launcher is certainly not recoilless (especially a monster like APILAS, what is that, 112mm?). Most of us probably remember the initial Aerial Rocket Artillery tests during the...

Re: Killing Infantry

By the way, while we're on the topic of infantry combat, let me say I'm impressed with dismounts in WinSPMBT. Watching those Marines in the Obong-ni Ridge scenario duke it out with T-34s in adjacent...

Re: OT- Recoiless Rifle

The recoilless round resembles an artillery round in rough appearance only; it functions somewhat differently. The array of holes in the propellant cartridge case vents a good deal of the expanding...

Re: Killing Infantry

Agreed, such "super rally" leaders should be few and far inbetween, probably best represented with high leadership quotients for specific individuals rather than overall troop quality ratings. The...

Re: Killing Infantry

I hear you. I'd rather be led by someone like the stoic Sgt.Rock hollering "C'MON, EASY!" myself than have some http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif lob a grenade at me. Then...

Re: Killing Infantry

Ah, thanks Don. I'm an old SPIII hand, and spend more time tweaking OOB files than playing so I hadn't noticed http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Re: OT- Recoiless Rifle

Getting back to recoilless rifles...

The distinction between rocket launchers and recoilless rifles is that the rocket round carries the propulsion motor with it while the RR propellant is in a...

Re: Morale Issues

I decided to re-read the accounts of the Battle of the Imjin River, a meeting engagement fought by the British 29th Brigade against vastly superior numbers of Chinese in April 1951. It was a...

Re: Killing Infantry

Hi all. I just noticed that infantry hits in WinSPMBT are now labeled "casualties", which is accurate and better than "kills".

As far as rally goes, I am reminded of Kurt 'Panzer' Meyer's story...

Re: MBT-70

I concur with your former conclusion in that Striker footage, PlasmaKrab. The wires are too thin to have much insulation, hence standing water, chain link fences, power/phone lines etc. may short out...

Re: MBT-70

It wasn't the missile, it was the conventional rounds that broke the fire control system. Every time the main gun fired a conventional 152mm round (that's a howitzer-sized round coming out of a...

Re: Weapon name questions

As far as the napalm goes, I think it's liters, or a close approximation thereof. 250 liters is about 63 gallons, and early napalm tanks were modified fighter plane drop tanks which held 75 gallons....

Re: MBT-70

The MGM-51 Shillelagh actually had a full six inch diameter warhead twenty years before the TOW 2 was fielded, and packed a 15 pound warhead, almost twice the weight of the five inch warhead of the...

Re: Weapon selection screen

This may be corny, but using the imagination, you could almost see your unit's crew in action...say it's a tank, and you spot an enemy tank. You hit the T key, and as you click on the enemy tank, the...

Re: My Strike aircraft targeting MY ammo trucks?!?

Danger close is a bad thing...

I hadn't heard of ADA units shooting down own aircraft with much frequency, but there were plenty of blue on blue airstrikes historically, even as recently as OIF....

Re: Laser ordinance guidance /designation from ground?

I briefly toyed with M981 FISTVs in SP3 armed with at most four Copperhead rounds. I used the stats from the Krasnopol found in SP3, and made it an ASM/LGB round. This gave the FISTV more of a punch...

Re: Damage to tank fire control systems

Hi. Not to get into when the tank slides off a narrow raised road surface and spikes their main gun in the dirt, effectively killing said tank...or the poorly maintained recoil mechanism failing,...

Re: New WinSPMBT Release Planned?

Hello all. I would like weapons slots upped to six, for the following reasons:

1. this will facilitate six-gun off-map artillery batteries without using two sections of three (eight-gun batteries...

Re: Morale Issues

Hello all. I concur with hoplitis and narwan, it is assumed these routed/retreating men are trained soldiers and not "civilians with guns". By firing small arms on your tanks, they're trying to...
