It's noted in the patch readme: U is for Uncommon. It has a slightly different price scale than Common does, and doesn't come up as often for sale as Common items.

Hmm...interesting thought. Though part of the strategy I think is to make the most of your 15 inventory slots, and protect them from the pirates.

As far as the ships for sale and their stats...

For the most part, a C means that it is common on most, if not all, the planets. Occasionally, an item may be slightly rarer on some planets than others, but for the most part, the Ratings apply to...
