Re: High level design thoughts

I've been away for a while her I am again.

I've tried to give these musings a little structure but really they are just popping out of my head.

Thinking about high game design I guess first and...

Re: Combat Mechanics

One thing a friend of mine came up with (over 10 years ago) was a pen and paper space campaign/combat system.

Nothing too unusual about that except one of the neat ideas it had was players could...

Re: Combat Mechanics

I think one thing the designers may want to consider is look at the effects they want to achieve.

For defence you could have the following I'm borrowing from Real Life navies.

Point Defence...

Re: Planets and Resources

Perhaps rather than hardcoding the definitions of 15 races maybe each race is based on 3 or 4 hab range characteristics, this determines the type of planets they like.

These have are not...

Re: Combat Mechanics

Very true Jars_u, but you could also have a short range interceptor missile.

It would have a longer range than point defence but much shorter range than an Anti Ship Missile (ASM). This would...

Re: Combat Mechanics

I see what you mean Q. Perhaps there could also be a general order such as Defend Starbase and/or Screen Starbase?

It all depends on the importance of Orbital facilities.

Say for instance...

Re: Planets and Resources

On the other hand MarcoPolo, I could design my race to live on Gas Giants. Hey let those hooomans have their rocky water worlds. I'll take Jupiter :-)

Re: Combat Mechanics

Well since the ball is rolling.

I think some sort of ship orders system would be nice.

Attack Close - Vessel(s) will close to shortest range.

Attack Standoff - Vessel(s) will stay at long...

Re: Planets and Resources

It really depends on how you would like to design your overall planet/colonisation rules.

How many star systems would the biggest game have?

How many objects were you planning to include in...

Re: Ship Talk

No Xrati not at all.

My point is better technology is not the be all and end all for fleet victory. Well thought out design and overall strategy should play a major part as well.

Weapons...

Re: Ship Talk

I noticed early on Ed mentioned Stars!

One of the design aspects of Stars! I loved is that shrewd design can compensate for lack of technology (within reason).

A lot of posts mention players...

Re: Planets and Resources

I suppose the two main reasons why I was thinking of zones are:

1. Micromangement - You could get through your economic management quickly.

2. Strategic Planning - Allows you to plan system...

Re: Planets and Resources

Well it depends on how you want to do your system map.

I've only played Stars! and SE V so I can't comment on SE IV.

the zone idea would reduce micromanagement in that instead saying, now I...

Re: Planets and Resources

Stellar Legacy looks like it has tremendous promise.

These are just my musings so feel free to ignore them. Or if you want me to elaborate on anything just ask.

One thing I've been thinking...
