Because of their superior speed on the tactical map I always found drones without any weapons or warheads were best used to blockade the worm holes/warp points. Enemy ships would just chase them...

Ship design was always one of my favorite aspects of both SE4 & 5 - but managing and upgrading all the incremental designs was certainly a chore especially as the game went on.
