If you played out each combat in real-time, the strategic game would never progress.

Which is why MM has never once stated any plans of making the strategic game real-time. That, and "real-time" never means "real real-time", but "pseudo-real-time". It never means "one second of real time = one second of actual game time" (for any sort of strategy game, at any rate).
