They only set the base cost. Something like $9-$13 depending on the shirt style. You can set the sale price any level you want so profit is up to you.
But its all pros and cons. Finding a shop and handling it all yourself to get more of a cut is probably true of anything. Most of those places want some sort of minimum order.
What I like about CafePress and some "print-on-demand" book place (I havent found a favorite yet) is that they allow EVERY web site to have tshirts, mouse pads, lunchboxes, designed for their site. Without having to do all the shopping-cart and shipping/tax garbage. For the books, I did one just to get a real book printed of some poems I did as a kid. I dont think the site is even there anymore but I didnt care. I only wanted one for myself. Of course if anything really takes off then the person would want to switch to something more inline-marketing. But its an easy start.
Its not a get-rish-quick thing where $2 each shirt I sell is going to make me quit my job. Its that I can offer my own shirts.
