There isn't a feasable way to make the minimap cover the entire sector and still be large enough to give direction indicators. The 300ls view does give direction indicators as well as hostile/not hostile indication, and nothing can fire on you from outside this radar range.

Not even if the map was 50-100% bigger and in the bottom left of the screen? This improvement and an option to see 600ls would be very appealing.
