Being a closet naval historian, I have no need to look at the history books. Who gave America to the world? the French and Spanish did. Rationale? Britian lost what you term the War of Independance primarily due to the lack of forces it could commit given that we were fighting France and Spain on the continent. By the standards of the continental powers, the American forces were small and untrained (at least at the start) and had Britain been able to commit more troops, the result would have been undoubtedly different.

Keep in mind that most of the attempts to rest Canada from the English came during 'quiet' times in Europe, we could commit and that is why Canada never left the empire until independance was granted.
