I'm doing it pretty similar to Nodachi.
Adding to build queues, and filling the research queue. So far, I haven't had to change any planet designations (mining colony/military base/etc).
I missed turns 19 through 44 while I slept, and went to work today, and my race is still in 3rd place, right where I left it, except much bigger
