I have my doubts too about 3D, perhaps they'll be persuaded enough to incorporate both 2D and 3D views with 360 degree panning view.
On another note, this guy has been building this turn based hex tactical WW2 game
"Second Front" on his own apparently with 2D and 3D views, looks promising despite the cartoonish look, i would support it just for the sake of it:
