The Soviets prepared themselves by collecting one T‑34‑85 company from the 98th Separate Tank Regiment, a company of five IS-2 tanks from the 27th Guards Separate Heavy Tank Regiment and the 31st Guards Separate Heavy Breakthrough Tank Regiment to reinforce the 185th Separate Tank Regiment and the 1222nd SPG Regiment.

The two rifle divisions in the centre and on the right flank were supported by an armoured force consisting of the 185th Separate Tank Regiment, 98th Separate Tank Regiment and the 1222nd Self-propelled Gun (SPG) Regiment. The 185th Separate Tank Regiment had about 17 operational T‑34s from a starting strength of 21 tanks. The 1222nd SPG Regiment had 17 of its original 21 SU‑76M self-propelled guns.
