I can't speak for range, but weapon slot is easy:
The machine guns are BMG (Bow mounted Machine Guns), ie mounted in the front hull.
Slot 4 limits the fire arc of vehicle weapons to the front arc only and is the mandatory slot for all bow mounted weapons.
