Laugh if you will but one of my major concerns during the 70's and early 80's concerning WW III was that NATO would run out of ammo before they ran out of Soviets. And I mean this literally, I really don't think the majority of the munitions stockpiles were large enough. And I don't think there would have been time to manufacture and transport any significant amount.
