Default Break Siege and arriving armies

I never played SP and in MP it doesn't come into play that many times so I thought I would ask.

If you are going to break a siege and have armies arriving from an adjacent province, does it become 2 battles which for the most part would render the rienforcements useless.

OR....because you ARE using break siege, you are ordering your troops in the fort to come out and fight also, all troops are used.

I could understand if you didn't use break siege that it would be a battle of troops showing up and the troops inside the fort do not get involved....sometimes common sense (lol, at least what I think common sense is)doesn't seem to apply.

Thanks

I presume that if the sieging opponent also brings in reinforcements from another nearby province those armies are doing friendly movement therefore will also be present in the battle, correct?

Yes. It would be one big battle. The reinforements of the sieging opponent would be present in the battle. Just like any of the defenders, both from breaking siege and attacking from nearby provinces, would be present.

But what if the enemy was storming the castle that turn. Would your troops coming from the other province appear inside your castle with the rest of your troops?

No, your from the outside territories will attack.

The troops in the castle will defend against the storm.

However, you can *sneak* your troops in.

One more question that isn't clear to me. If you break siege will that catch an army sieging if it moves away? Or is that random?

But if you gave the troops the sneak order, they would end up hidden and therefore useless in the fight. It'd work with more than 1 turn of course.

My understanding of non-magic movement is ALL movement occurs, including break siege, then battles are fought. Then storm castle occurs.

The only cases in which movement will fail are a magical attack in the earlier phase, or if the move is directly opposed in which case the possible failure is random but biased towards the larger army failing. It is possible for forces to pass without engaging also, again dependent on size and randomness.

So to answer your question Maerlande, you will not catch the army moving away with the army inside the fort.

e: Directly opposed meaning the army in A moves to B and the army in B moves to A.

Movement happens before combat. All movement. The only time combat seems to happen first is when two armies move into each other, at which point it has to decide which province they fight in, should they encounter each other.

So, when you break siege, if the sieging army moves away you will never catch them. If you move an army onto the fort from the province they are moving to, and it decides the combat will be fought in the fort's province, then your units breaking siege will get to join in.

One other thing, there can be two battles in teh province in one condition. If you attempt to break the siege (either with armies moved in from elsewhere or with units in the castle or both), and they attempt to storm the castle in the same turn, then if the sieging army wins the regular battle any remaining commanders set to storm will attempt to take teh castle. This will be reported as a second battle and will be fought against any units in the castle who did not attempt to break the siege. (Ok, you could also get a magical phase battle in addition to both of those, obviously)
