As is, they're awesome recruitable, cheap chaff summoners paired up with counts.

Whether or not you want them to supplant your national troops is another question.

I'll continue in the spirit of the thread title -- Are all summons upkeep free? If not, how can you tell what the upkeep is?

Most are... but you need to check the wiki to be sure. I know that the trolls aren't... they're pretty pricey too.

Usually summons are free. The exception seems to be when they can be purchased by another nation or era, than they have an upkeep. I know the Oni all have upkeeps, because they could be purchased in the earlier era. I could be mistaken.

Trolls have a very expensive upkeep. I am not sure exactly what it is. They cost 60 gold when you find them native to a province.

The Wiki seems to be off line. I haven't been able to get on it for about five days.

Again, anything that can be purchased will have an upkeep, even if you summoned it.

Trolls and Oni come to mind first.

Was there a key which reveals some of the hidden stats of a unit, such as upkeep cost?

Your best bet is to find the monster database. I forget where I got mine.

Second best is to note what the cost is to recruit a unit. It's constant. If it can't be recruited, it has 0 cost/upkeep.

(This is why the bug Wild Ettins have 0 cost -- they're intended as a summon, not as a recruit)
