Default Bug or new feature?

Before the patch, whenever I would invade a base with a TF containing only CA's, CL's and the amphib unit,..the CA's and CL's remained at the base if it was taken. Now they arent, at least on turn 1 as Japan, I will play on to see if it continues.

Turn 1 Japan invades Midway with a TF containg 2 CA's and SNLF from Marianas and a few other TF's from different locations. Japan invades Luzon from Formosa with a TF containing 2 CA's, 3 CL's and a SNLF, and couple of other TF's from Formosa and Home Islands. Both invasions are successful, but no ships remain patrolling either base.

Turn 2- Japan invades Borneo and Leyte from home islands with TF's both containing 1 CA and 1 CL and 1 SNLF. Both invasions are accompanied by other TF's from Home islands and Formosa. The Leyte invasion I had to withdraw immediately because it seemed every allied ship was there. Borneo was successful since there were no ships defending it at all. The TF containing the CA and CL that accompanied the SNLF which captured Borneo returned to home islands instead of staying at Borneo AND instead of returning to Luzon or Formosa which were both closer bases that could accomodate them.

--- As a side note isnt it odd that the allies AI commited everything to defending Leyte and left Borneo, a much more important base, undefended?

Edit- I beleive before the patch an amphib unit that was used in an invasion that was aborted vanished from the game, but the SNLF from the invasion of Leyte that I withdrew from was still with its TF back at Home Islands the following turn.

Ok, after playing a complete game here are my results.

Any TF which participates in an invasion, whether it is in the TF that contains the ampphib unit or not, will return to the base it was sent from NOT the closest base that can accomodate them. Any TF that patrols a base will return to the nearest base that can accomodate it if the base being patrolled cant accomodate it.

I didnt do any raids aside from the one on pearl harbor on turn 1, so I cant comment on that one yet.

When you choose TFs from another base than the one your Invasion fleet is leaving from, I think it classifies that TF as a Raid, even tho it will participate in the Invasion, thus it will return to it's original base.
The Invasion TF itself, I think that maybe, if any one single ship is too large for the base to accomodate, then the entire Invasion TF will return???? Not sure if it still happens, but I thought that sometimes my Invasion TF that couldn't base at the island it was attacking, would sometimes 'scatter' to other bases, instead of the entire TF staying together, and even ships would be seperated from the original TF upon returning to the original base???

The raid thing explains why TF's that are involved with ships to big for the captured base to accomodate are returning to the base they were sent from. However, the TF that contains the amphib unit is returning to the base it was sent from also REGARDLESS if the captured base can accomodate the ships in the TF or not. That has changed with this patch without a doubt.

As in my example above, when a TF containing only CA's and CL's and the amphib unit attacks Luzon and captures it, the TF returns to where it was sent from instead of staying at Luzon, as it would have before the patch.

We'll have to check with John. I'm like you, I expect my TF that includes the amphib, to stay at the base if the base can accomadate it.

Well, maybe he will answer one day. Hes probably busy,...not to mention he would need to recreate the bug in a game to make sure it is a bug,....etc.

Sorry to take so long...

There weren't any changes to the Return to Base logic (at least no intentional ones...), so in theory everything should be the same as before. I'll have to fire up a 1.0.0 version and try to repro what Scott's seeing.

Here's what's supposed to happen:
  1. The ships in an Invading TF (meaning, the TF with the transports) will attempt to remain at a captured base, but are subject to base size requiremments.
  2. Large ships (CV, BB, BC) must return to a Major base, and captured bases are almost always going to suffer enough damage during the invasion to be reduced below Major size.
  3. Smaller ships don't have that restriction, but if the base is damaged badly enough ("destroyed"), even smaller ships may not be able to base there until it has been rebuilt.
  4. Ships in a Raiding TF (even if the "raid" is on a base that another TF is invading that same turn) will return to their starting base after combat and will not attempt to remain at the captured base.

I'll look into this one, thanks for the report!
