Default Chapter 6, Striking South: Battle of the Kim Son

Chapter 6, Striking South: Battle of the Kim Son

In the mountains west of the Bong Son plains was the Kim Son Valley - sometimes called the Crow's Foot because of the shape of the surrounding hills looked like a bird's foot.. This was some of the worst terrain imaginable: the hills were very steep, the jungle and underbrush very thick, and there were copious snakes and leaches. To make matters worse, February was a rainy season month, often making flying impossible for helicopters, and life miserable for grunts on the ground.

This will be the staging area for my first chapter. It will be 100% based on the action of B Company 2/5 (2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry division), during OP EAGLE CLAW 16-17 February.

http://www.tallcomanche.org/Document...rom_OKeefe.htm

(The personal accounts of OC B Coy Capt Robert W. McMahon, complete with map overlays and narration)

The company was supposed to be a blocking force (the anvil) for two other companies that was tasked to drive a decimated VC force out of the area. B coy however managed to stumbled right into something that later turned out to be a full strenght Heavy Weapons Battalion of the Quyet Chien Regiment.

They charged head into it on their way to their blocking postions. What followed was a withdrawl to the LZ Pete and a desperate defensive battle. A coy was sent to rescue B, but followed a VC commo wire right into the heart of their Bn HQ. There they ambushed soldiers that was about to bring out more heavy weapons to use on B´s postion at the LZ. They also killed these Viet Cong and captured numerous recoilless rifles, and a number of mortars, along with communications equipment, and important documents.

Daring supply helo sorties and massive airstrikes was what saved the day for B coy, huddled up in fresg B52 craters around a clearing in the Jungle.

Secondary mission
"Go get'em, Joe!"
February 17 (Thursday) 9:40

B Company reached LZ Pete in the morning at 9:40 and the platoons spread further out to find blocking positions. This was when they first got enemy contact and the masssive VC onslaught begun.

The commander needs to withdraw his troops back to the relative "safety" of LZ Pete.

Primary Mission
"LZ Pete"
February 17 (Thursday) 10:45

The bits and pieces of the company that the player did manage to save can now be deployed aroun LZ Pete. Its now about stemming the tide and making good use of the ground, the fire support and resupplies.

My idea is to constantly reinforce the VC so that new units keeps popping up out of the jungle, giving a feeling of being surrounded. These units should however be rather easy to route so they withdraw after getting to many losses, giving a impression of assault waves coming and going.
Own supplies can come in on AUX choppers or just being dropped. In this case they will be reinforcments in form of ammo boxes scattered over the LZ. The player then needs to make assaults of his own to be able to get the much needed supplies (just as in the real battle).

The battle will end when the turns are over really...

Very nice Pergite.

Some comments:

The secondary mission have several functions as:

1. Giving the feeling of multiple stages of a mission.
2. Ability to slightly modify some parameters of the primary mission by assigning special objectives and relating the outcome/score of the battle with the cross-link direction.
Read the appropriate thread: Cross Link Scenarios: Mission type

http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/thr...b=5&o=&fpart=1

Anyway, if a designer wants to make LINEAR the cross-link connection of a secondary mission with the primary one, then this is fine.

cheers,

Ok, I will try to make things more dynamic.

There wont be any possibility to replenish the losses between the missions. So depending on the outcome of the first contact I guess that the player that lost alot need some kind of handicap to keep going. The brigade level plan for the operation had a entire battalion in reserve ready to deploy to LZ Pete if needed.

Should the player have gotten the proper outcome of the sceondary mission and succeded with the "correct" primary one, then the bonus mission could kick in.
An all inclusive R&R trip to Tokyo... Or a strike at a undefended VC Rgt HQ (They where monitored during the battle, keept poor radio discipline and could just as easily been pinpointed)

Hi,

The secondary mission should only be a fraction of the primary.
Giving the fact that the player should keep the strength of his forces at an acceptable level the player should decide if the task to fulfill the objectives of the secondary mission is worth the risk.

I will try to create a dummy secondary mission today to demonstrate the mechanism (VP locations) of such a technique.

Keep in mind that if (FOR EXAMPLE) the player succeed in destroying the secondary objective (an NVA artillery park) he may face less hostile artillery in the primary mission.
There are dozens of bonus or penalties that the player can inherit from a secondary mission... It is possible even to increase or decrease the time allowance of the primary mission (+/- 10 turns, for example).

SO many options !!!

cheers,

Default LZ pete

OK...

Its really a boring landscape to make maps of, and it could probably in hindsight been totally auto generated. Anyway, here is my vision of LZ Pete and the surroundings that probably will be the main battle in this chapter.

Its just a map, I am not satisfied with the delpoyments of units yet.

The Coy HQ should be setup in the (B52) craters in the LZ clearing. I dont know if the clearing should be surrounded with streams or if it would be better with swamps. The penalties are roughly the same for infantry so its just a matter of estetics.
The blocking positions where on the hills directly to the north and east. The surrounding jungle belongs to the VC and they will be creeping out of everywhere.

I am not sure about the thickness of jungle and the distance to it frpm the hills. I have done som playtesting, experimenting with vision and jungle to see what seems be best. The mission should be challeninging, but not impossible.

AUX troops will be Skyraiders that will be very usefull. Napalm in the treelines will be the key to succes. One or two arty batteries will also be in as support.

The only heliopters will be two UH-1´s that will reinforce carrying desperatly needed ammo crates.
