Default How do difficulty levels work?

Unsure if anyone really knows this... I'm in a game right now at the third toughest difficulty level and am finding it pretty easy going. Anyone know how difficulty levels work? A multiplier of some sort somewhere in the config files? I couldn't find anything obvious myself. I'd like to be able to globally boost the difficulty level in-game right now to make for a challenge.

The difficulty levels work as follow:

Easy - oil burns slower, more items, smaller maps, less monsters
Medium - unchanged
Hard - more monsters, stronger monsters, bigger maps
Nightmare - lots of monsters, they're tougher, and the maps are way bigger

I believe *how* they affect the game is hard coded as I did not find anything obvious tying the difficulty with the other elements.

You could manually tweak some of the settings by playing around with the config files.

I'll drop the developer a line and hopefully he'll be able to drop by soon to give a better answer.
