Playing SPWoW on a server?

It's been a long time since I've chimed in on this board. I took some time away from the game. I am pleased to see that the community is still going.

I may have posed this question years ago, but the question is still in my mind. Has anyone tried playing the game with/against others running it on a server? I envision avoiding playing against others where game files are NOT sent back and forth as in the PBEM mode. Perhaps play the game in the Hotseat mode.

If someone has done this could they share their approaches to it? Were they able to restrict the players' view of any game or server features, windows, etc other then the main game window including the game files?
