Default question...

long time turn based fan. messed with dom 1 demo, played dom 2(for a month before losing it in a move). usually work a ton of hours but have two months before i go back to that hell. so here is the question: is it worth me buying dom 3 for two months? i am a TRUE newbie, so i guess the question is, will i end up getting totally smoked? and also, i am not exactly technically proficient(hey, im 40, so i am ancient) so if it is hard to get into a mult player game, it might not be for me.

that said, i loved dom 2 single player, and would love to play multi player dominions. don't mind losing, but to be honest, when i read a few AARs, i could only get about 80% of it.

anyway, how long would it take me to get into a game, and are there any games that a newbie like me might be able to survive in?

that said, thanks to all of you that wrote those AARs. great, fun reading. must have put a lot of time and effort into those

Well the game isnt worth 50$ if you are going to only play for 2 months. And most MP games last 3+months. You might die early and get out, but if you are winning, you will have to drop the game and screw over the other players in the lategame.

All in all, probably not worth it

I always say that Ive paid as much for games that didnt last a month on my machine. Dominions (1,2,3) have migrated to every new computer of mine for many years. I think you will find it still worth playing even when you swing back to having free time. Just IMHO

It also works well on laptops. And on a flash drive for portability.
I enjoy solo play.

ON THE OTHER HAND...
I do feel it worth warning that if you plan to dive into Dom3 for 2 months and then give it up to concentrate on work again, then even I cant recommend that you get it. The game is notorious for getting people in trouble at work. It is addictive.

I've been playing Dom for years, every week and even every day on and off. I play a lot.

There are some always-open games on the Dom3Minions server.
They are often used by people in the IRC channels for what they call "blitz" games (as many turns as possible until people get tired of it and quit). That is the best bet for insuring a quick game

It's pretty easy to get games. New games are starting all the time, or if there's not a new one recruiting players you can start one yourself. For a newbie game it's probably best to start it yourself. It does usually take a few days to get a group of players together and a game started, but effort-wise it's low.

MP games do tend to take a while, so if you're planning to play for just 2 months, it's best if you do get destroyed fast! If you still have learning to do in SP though the game should last you well beyond that point. I would say that due to the length of MP matches, it probably takes about a year of MP to really learn the game thoroughly, coupled with reading and talking with other players. To just play at a competent level you should be able to do in 3-6 months, depending on your learning curve and how much you play. For SP it should go a lot faster, you can pretty much learn the ropes of how to handle SP with just a few weeks of play.

Personally, if you liked the game before I would still recommend buying it. On a pure $$$ spent per hour of entertainment provided, Dominions 3 is an excellent investment.

Out of curiosity, why is it you are restricted to two months? In the event that it is a soft restriction that may well go away I'd recommend going for Dominions 3 - I don't play nearly as much as many here, and consider playing once a week a very high rate of play. That said, I always love playing it, and it is one of the few games that really sticks for an extended period of time.

MP pretty much never is more than 1 turn a day. its usually more like 3 a week. but keep in mind lategame turns can take 30mins+ to do a good job of if you make it that far
