Well... Kwok has forced my hand, so now I announce the founding of a brand new Space Empires fan site, SpaceEmpires.net! The url is thus:

http://spaceempires.net

I have not yet created everything I plan on for it, but it certainly has content so far. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Some random features:

Hosts tons of SE-related files for download.
Has a forum.
Has a newsletter.
Has an Image Gallery (that is not creating thumbnails at present http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif ).
SE.net Tribune - articles on various SE4-related subjects, currently only one there.
Other stuff.

Possible plans of offering cheap/free web hosting for SE-related sites.

Ha Ha Ha! The website was all my idea. I told Fyron that his Kazharii Hub was worthy of the spaceempires.org domain and that he should try and revive that site - but instead he got his own domain!

I don't like that PHP-nuke, blah blah, website interface, but I'm sure that the amount of crap and useful stuff you'll make available will certainly appease my visual discomfort with the site! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

I must agree, I am really not a big fan of PHP Nuke.

You should have tried for something more originall.

Wow, looks to be quite an ambitious undertaking.

Bookmarked by me it is!

(no clue why I suddenly started speaking in Yoda)

Looks to be a good start! (though I agree about the mediocre look of the php-nuke sites; very cookie-cutter looking).

Fans of Space Empires, visit you must!

(That Yoda thing is spreading, Voidhawk! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif )

gotta agree with fyron there.

php-nuke is a good content management system...

This allows the content to be created and maintained dynamiclly.

As the site grows and more and more people chip into the site the site grows.

To do this without a content management system is a huge waste of time. As you will be doing the same stuff over and over to upkeep the contents of the site.

Why not automate it.

Sure pretty sites are nice to look at.... But it is the content that keeps you coming back.

This is the difference between a programmer and a graphics designer concepts of web development.

If you want it to look nice... why not create icons , fonts , banners etc... for him and then fyron can work on the php end to add that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

sorry thermo you lost me

how does using asp affect the content management system ???

asp on its own is just another scripting language

Thermodyne

As the content changes, ASP alters the html that the browser displays.

You need to change the text in line four of your default page. It sets a link of "PHP nuke Powered Site", which is what a lot of them set, and it gets confusing.

Ooooooh! It's purty!

Why would I bother with ASP when this works great?

When you bookmark Tesco’s site, it uses the text from line four of his default page to identify the link. And a lot of Nuke sites return the same text.

ASP is OK and ASP.net is neat. If you know PHP, then by all means use it. My comment was just a reply to Tesco's post. As in "he could use ASP to build an entry page."

You have to set your comp up as a server. PHP is a server side language, not client side.
