As for the thread title - a blatant fishing for compliments. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
As for the ships - well, you said it, some of your best work to date. I do hope that you round out the set eventually - the currently existing shipset for the EDF is just "lifted" screenshots, and could stand improvement.

Great!
I expecially like the different coloring in the hilights of the ships. It can be used by some space navy to determine the class of a ship upon visual contact.

I wanted to give the Colonyship a differant look then I have given other ships of its classification.
I hope it is well received.

I tried to do something new with the Transports *** well. Given the fact that this set looks like a real naval ship set, I thought the look for the Transports should look like a modern day cargo ship with cargo being stored on the deck.

Logo type cargo containers are just plain silly. Sorry. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif What does the colour type mean ? Here are the cloths, here are the cars and here is the enriched U-235. No, all containers on modern cargo ships are uniform and of the same boring color. I think. Give more attention to mini images. So far, transportLarge and transportMedium would look too similiar in mini. images. I think again http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I have to agree with Oleg. I think it would be much better giving them a solid bulky look than those loose cargo pods on a flat bed. This set is shaping up far too well to let a bad transport series ruin it.

Hmm, having read others' comments WRT the transport hulls, I've got an idea for you.
I tend to think that planet-to-planet transport of cargo (and even passengers) would be done with large modular cargo containers, INTO which individual companies' or private individuals' cargo containers are loaded.
If we assume a sort of "highport" affair for orbit-to-ground transfer of cargo, then the modules needn't even be capable of moving up and down the gravity well.
However, they might be small ships in their own right, in terms of STL, orbital-maneuver-speed movement. IOW, the actual transports might not DOCK to the local highport, they might simply pull up NEARBY, and let the Cargo Transport Modules ("CTM") themselves do the to-and-fro. If you assume one CTM per X kT of Transport hull-size, you get a built-in design lineage effect.
To make it a "containers on a deck" effect, Atrocities, you could have the raw Transports themselves have a large, flat area (a deck), with a half-hull section below it; the bow can be full-height, and come up to the level of the CTM's top. A bridge tower tothe rear, with the engines, gives you a pretty close concept to what you're trying to do. Configure the varying number of CTMs on that flat area, and you should have what you need.
For example, if you figure a CTM to be a big, hexagonal cylinder shape (with their own small bridge at one end and some tiny engines at the other), with it's length being 2x to 3x it's diameter, you could do (I assume one CTM per ~150kT of Transport hull):
TINY: Just a CTM (perhaps with slightly bigger engines), if such a hull size was needed (I think Neo or Neo++ uses Tiny Transports ... doesn't it?).
SMALL: two CTMs, parallel to ship axis, one beside the other.
MEDIUM: four CTMs, perpendicular to ship axis, in a row from bow to stern.
LARGE: six CTMs, parallel to ship axis; take the side-by-side pair of CTMs on the Small, put a third atop that (to make a trangle). Then place one triangle ahead of the other.
... and so on, if you want really BIG transports.
I think that'd give you a very "container ship" feel, and also something of a "wet navy in space" look, while being more "semirealistic SF".
You could even have the PORTRAITS be of transports during loading/unloading ... nothing says a portrait has to be of the ship while in full flight!! Such a "mid-loading" portrait could help emphasise that the CTMs are semi-autonomous vehicles in their own right.
For the colony ship ... picture a one-CTM (parallel to spine) ship, where the CTM docks into a bay BELOW a domed area, like your image below has on it. Rather like the old transport / "flying crane" helo's, as far as teh CTM. Might tie the COL in to the Transport hull series, as a specialised transport of sorts.
Oh,and BTW ... those are some NICE-looking ships you've got there. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif I can't wait for the finished product ... !!

Lovely, just lovely! I fear your skill, Atrocities. Fear I say. I'm cowering in front of my monitor right now.
Though I must agree with the general consensus on the transports. The cargo boxes are a great idea that seem a little less than great in execution.
Three questions: Is it done yet? How about now? Now?

This is an excellent ship set, Atrocities. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif
The carriers are excellent as they are, but I thought of a couple of things for detail (please take these suggestions with a grain of salt). Is is possible to add text to the textures in Doga? If so, you could place a large numeral at the end of the flight deck (or on the hull for the battleships, etc.). Also, when you get the fighters finished, you could shrink one down and make copies, and scatter them around the flight deck for effect.
Just a couple thoughts for your consideration...

Though, in a terribly unimportant way that does not smudge how well the ships and fighters and everything look, I have some trouble telling the Small from Medium Weapons Platforms. It is possible there is some detail that I simply didn't notice, but I thought I let you know what I thought.

1. How do you create these pictures??
2. Did you know that Starblazers has a nice looking tactical game (ala Star Fleet Battles), a Technical Manual with descriptions of most of the ships from the 3 races with pictures (ala Battletech) and miniatures: http://members.aol.com/neghvar2/index.htm
3. constructive critizism: the fighters fit the look of the rest of the shipset, but not so much the Starblazers look. The troops are way off. At the risk of of sounding ungrateful, is there any chance you could change them?
As odd as it might be, I'd be willing to send you a copy of the technical manual that I have so you can see the tanks, ships, etc. I'd concider it a payment for services of making this awesome shipset, and hope that it might spur you to tweak this (my new favorite) shipset.

I talk about it a bit on my web site, http://galileo.spaceports.com/~william/main.htm but basically I map out my image, adding, subtracting items and things until I have what I hope is the best looking copy of the image I am working on. I think spend time adding details and other aspects. Since I did not have a large ship library to go on, I had to employ some creative license with several of the ships, carriers, transports, fighters, etc.

Id certainly love to see a gamelon and Comet empire shipset redone)))--so theres another Vote)))--haha. Also if anyone makes a comet empire shipset --try to make the Baseship the actual Comet/ city on top--as the Biggest ship. This seems logical cause if it were a starbse it be stationary--and in the show that badboy moved across the stars. The EDF shipset is superb BTW--Im a huge fan of the show and am planning on getting the second and third series DVD's in a few weeks. Once you have the images for the shipsets you can also use the "older shipsets" as reference for colors, or as a further basis to create a design from. OK back to my star trek mod game now--just got attacked by the Romulans--and that cant go unpunished)))

Does anyone know where I can pick up the Star Blazers dvd's for cheaper than what they're usually going for? I was fortunate to find the Last 3 of series 1 and the first 4 of series 2 at a used cd/movie place for $10 a piece. The movie store where I get most of my new movies usually sells them for $29.95 apiece. So I saved myself a bunch of dough, but I don't feel like paying the $60 for the other 2 dvd's I need to complete the second series.

I picked up the first Bolar Wars DVD from them.
Bolar Wars is just not good. Maybe this is a case of me just having grown up, but the plot is thin, acting/dubbing bad and in 4 episodes (haven't watched the 5th yet) the action has been very lean.

Brilliant job on the EDF shipset. Beats the hell out of my screencaps of painted models done up in Windows Paint. I'm glad there was enough interest out there in Starblazers to inspire this set. Atrocities, if you're keen on doing up the Gamilons and White Comet Empire, I still have the screencap shipsets I did up ages ago. As with the old EDF set, the potrait pics are screencaps of the die cast models released for the ship classes from the first two Starblazers series.

In just over 24 hours I will no longer have access to the web. I will have only a very limited dial up service, 14.4 - connection at best, to upload and download turns for my PBW games. On average it takes about an hour to download just a couple of turns so uploading large files, such as ship sets, is out of the question.
I really want to cry about RL, but we all face it and there is nothing that any of us can do but try to get along with it.

Add the EDF to the Neo-Standard complaint Ship Sets now.
I added all of the neo ships/bases/other and fixed the mine group portrait, replaced all of the troop images with better looking images.
The funny thing is, no one reported the mine group error. That means no very few people, perhaps one or two, actually downloaded the set. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif
This does not boad well for any future sets from the Starblazer universe.

Well, I might have been the third person to download the set. I just haven't unzipped it yet, so therefore didn't notice any errors. But I am very much in favor of any and all Starblazer shipsets. I've downloaded all that I could find, but I have so many sets at the moment I just haven't been able to uncompress them all yet. But if anyone is thinking about making a Starblazers universe, count me in.

thanks for that u[pdate--I for one am a fan of the series, and i use the set in 2 modded games i am playing. I did not notice any mine errors. If you have an EDf shipset--it just seems natural to have the Gamilons and Comet empire--as companion shipsets. Maybe ill make a poll to see if anyone will be interested in seeing these sets come out. I do understand that making the sets is time consuming--and that you have mod responsibilities as well--so maybe a poll will spur interest. This thread has also been buried down deep on page 5 or so--so maybe people arent aware???. IThanks again for the effort and consideration so far--its a great set.
Atrocities
November 27th, 2003, 08:32 AM
Making the sets is really not all that time consuming once I have the basic ship design built.
If I have a good model to go on I can normally have a working prototype ship within an hour or so, and a complete set in eight hours. That is working on it without interruption or worries.
I will see what I can do about getting the set off the ground. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Who knows, something good has got to happen soon. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Besides, making ships seems to be a nice diVersion.

Here are two prototypes. I will do some more tweaking on them when I have time. Please keep in mind that Doga is not an exacting program so there will be some distortion in the designs compared to the actual ship as seen in the TV series or other.
I am working on the Gamilon at this point, and will do ships as I get time.
These ships are not yet sized to scale and understand that I will have to take some creative license with the ships and sets in order to accomplish the goal of creating a complete set.

I am a hardcore fan- and the ships for both sets are awesome. The only thing i dont care too much for are the EDF's fighters. I'm not too big on inconsistencies, I use the shipsets to have fun and capture the flavor of the starblazers universe. Once i get my LAN parties started again--I know 3 other people who will want starblazer looking sets---or just Japanese anime looking sets. So i usually keep my eye out and download them all--then just use them in whatever mod or game were playing. As far as the EDF's fighters are concerned-- id like to eventually see a Black Tiger looking fighter --the other designs capture the feel just fine.

I will post images as I get them done, but you can take a look at what I do have if you want. Input is welcome.

I have finished the set and will be making the AI and other files sometime today or tomorrow. I still need a good Race speech file and design names file.

How about Gamilon tankers for transports (instead of container ships)?

The fighters could use some yellow markings/highlights.
The carriers could be more elongated... leaner.

Thanks for the great set))) The broken links i put up are actually listed in the Play by web shipset listing--for any to download.(shipset is by groggy) I dont have any comments but agree that the carriers could be longer/leaner. The red Fleet carrier was also one of the cooler ships in the shows (Red carrier That flipped its deck from carrier to a gun platform) Thats usually a favorite for us hardcore fans. I am just really Thankful for the two sets--hoping to see a Comet Empire one in the future--so i can maybe attempt a SB mod??????

Looks great. Can't wait to try this set out. Also, I'd be very interested in a SB mod, so I wish you success in making one.

Thanks guys, I will see what I can do about the Carriers. The problem with making them longer and leaner is that you will loose all detail in a 36 x 36 image. I can recolor the tri-deck, (Large) to be red and post it here as a bonus ship. The will add some highlights to the fighters as well.

the red carrier was a unique design--and was a single deck craft--the deck launched its fighters--and then it flipped over into a gun platform--if ya have the first series--you can see it in action --General Lysus used it in his task force--no need to recolor the tri-deck-- just a heads up))

I haven't had a chance to do much with the Comet Empire as of yet. I hope to be able to have someting eventually, but not anything for the foreseeable future. Of course any one can make a set using DOGA or other program.

What? No picture of Derek Wildstar? I haven't seen the 3rd series, but IIRC, he was pretty much up there in rank, plus he was commanding the Yamato. Now you're putting in this mystery guy who you never told us who he was modeled after. Still looks like Clooney to me. But it's still a great set.
