Well, there is a listing of freeware at gamehippo (http://www.gamehippo.com/), and a listing of demos and freeware at megagames (http://www.megagames.com/), The Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.org/theme.php?id=26) have a shareware section, or you could try the Runesword 2 demo (http://www.runesword.com/rs2.html).

you know, i don't know why i never mentioned www.windward.net (http://www.windward.net) and there enjoyable enemy nations, now available as a free download.
warning: the ai will not work on some computers, for some reason.

Today I discovered an interesting (and gorgeous) multiplayer space sim called DarkSpace. While it's not a shareware game, they are offering FREE play for the next two weeks. It comes with a server and map editor too.
