Hello,

Just read something in a forum that I thought was impossible. Can someone tell me if I am mistaken?

When retrofitting, I know there is a limit on how much the two designs can differ in value. Is this limit defined between the ship's current design or its original design? I.e. Can I build an empty hull, and then retrofit it up through a series of intermediate hulls to something of arbitrarily high value?

yes you can.

The actual level is set in the settings.txt

Retrofit Max Percent Difference in Cost := 50

So 50% is the max difference in cost for the retro series ship.

There is great detail on this subject in section 5.5 of the Newbie FAQ:

Hope it gets again stickified soon!

Anyway, just to be clear, the 50% increase per retrofit applies to total resources needed before and after, not to each resource:

Total M+O+R after retrofit can be no greater than 1.5 x Total M+O+R before retrofit.

And it applies to the current/planned designs, not the original.
If you wanted, you could retroseries build a sphereworld generator in two turns. (One to build the core, then retroseries in sequential turn mode, then one more turn to repair and activate)
It would only cost, IIRC, a couple million minerals in that turn; much much more than the total cost of building them normally.
