View Full Version : Attention Modders- Do you like GIANT ROBOTS?!? Well then...

I could use your help. I have been working on a mod that allows you to make your very own GIANT ROBOTs(tm) with which to dominate the galaxy. In fact I am just about ready to start doing some testing on PBW (just in case I'm a little biased on the balance issues) but I have one slight problem... I lack pictures of GIANT ROBOTSs(tm)!

If you are good at 3D modeling, are an anime fan who likes scanning through mountains of stills, of are just a masochist, then I need you!

I need pics for these mech sizes:

MechaSmall
MechaMedium
MechaRepair - has a special mount for the repair bay
MechaLarge
MechaShield - has a special mount for shields
MechaAssault - has a special direct fire mount
MechaElite - has access to both the assault and shield mecha mounts.

I need pics for each race, though only the small, medium and large mecha pics are required. They don't have to be humanoid but they should definitely not look like ships or fighters.

I have some robots aquired from the doga website that I converted to doga3 that I could upload if anyone wants a template to start with. This is what I have been doing though my attempts have been frustrating and slow going. So, in the interests of seeing this mod reach completion, I beg of you, send me your ROBOTS!

Fine then, no one seems to be into the idea of making doga-bots. I can understand that. How about general interest in this particular mod idea? Does anyone here want to see a horde of spaceworthy battle mecha storm across the galaxy shattering all who stand in their path (or, conversely, see them all simultaneously taken out by an unforseen minefield)?

In other words, is there enough interest for me to bother posting this mod when it is (eventually) finished? Or is the prodominant SEIV crowd staunchly against the idea of anthropomorphizing their technology?

Twould be nice to know. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

How are mechas supposed to carry shields and repair bays? Those don't really work on troops... or are these transformer mecha that turn into spaceships and fly from planet to planet? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

This sounds like a good addition to a mod, not a shipset. New "Giant Robot Bays", "Giant Robots", "Giant Robot Weapons", and a "Nadesico High Mobile Civilian Battleship" for a carrier! Obviously, they would launch like fighters, but kick *** in ground combat, as well!

Well purely depends on how well implemented it is.

If it works good and looks good - I'd download it!

It would seem someone has been watching too much Sci-fi and Anime. Of course, there is no such thing as too much Sci-fi and Anime.

See if the troop pictures in the Azorani and Namovan shipsets are anything like what you need. If so, I might be able to generate some variations of those.

When thinking about these mechs, think more Gundam and Macross, rather than Battletech. They need to look speedy and agile above all else. Some examples of what I have so far are...

MechaSmall (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436012.bmp)
MechaMedium (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436137.bmp)
MechaLarge (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436170.bmp)
MechaAssault (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436195.bmp)
MechaElite (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436222.bmp)
MechaElite_mini (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066436247.bmp)

These are all blatant rip-offs from samples provided by the doga website but I have been trying to do some tinkering using them as a template.

Could you come up with a slightly more "spaceworthy" Version of them in Xi'Chung colours?

I don't have a copy of the Azorani on my comp and I can't det to either PBW or SOTAS. Do you have a link?

<font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Not too bad. It looks kinda like a Terran or Piundon repair mech. That open bay in the bottom seems like it's made to hold damaged mechs. Knock a few of the gun barrels off and add some kind of repair-type apendages and it would be perfect.

If anyone wants to do the template thing here are some of the Doga3 converted mechs from the website...

Doga3Bots.zip (http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/newuploads/1066437972.zip)

Just decompress and then put the folder in DOGACGA->data->l3_samp->connection->human->robot folder

The rest should be good as gold.

So, um... what are these robots going to do? When they're not protecting Earth from Angels, I mean.

Will they be just like fighters? Or will they actually be ground/space dual-capability units, like Gundams? Is that possible in the current game, to have units that can fight in space and on planets?

Actually, I am a psycho fanatical Zeon fan boy to be exact.

Anyway, this is all great stuff there, when my copy of SF comes, I may just make a mecha mod ^__^.

Actually, Rex, those remind me alot of the mecha from the Armored Core series(great games, btw).

Rex, mind if I use those images in LR mod?

Originally I wanted them to be a cross between fighters and troops, but that was impossible. Then I tried doing a mod where the mechs were basically pumped up fighters but I found that the fighter stacking thing (and the inability to strategically launch fighters individually) grossly unbalanced the game.

Then came drones and I figued that converted drone hulls would be perfect, but the order restrictions were too great. So now they are essentially ships between 30-55kt with intrinsic attack and defense bonuses equivalent to that of a fighter minus max training bonuses, modified for size, tech level etc. The mechs have a max# of engines of 5 (so that the fastest of ships will still outpace them) but bonus combat movement that basically goes up with level (starts at +1 goes to +3).

I have mounts for most components (except those that do not fit with the "Mech" concept such as shipyards and stellar manipulation. This also encourages mixed fleet design) that reduce tonage to 10% and structure/damage/supply to 50%. They also have a special PD mount to reflect the mecha tendancy to doge/shoot down incomming missiles. Other mounts may have different characteristics (like the armor mount that reduces structure to 60% instead of 50%, and various special mounts restricted to certain mech sizes). Over all you have an inexpensive, easy to produce, and agile alternative to a ship based fighting force. The Elite Mecha was designed to be loosely equivelant to a battlecruiser. From my play testing they seem to be quite balanced and fun. But I still want to test it out with human players to finetune it.

As for the heavy and the light, can you make the heany seem less like a walker robot? These are completely spacebound bots and I'm trying to stay away from the groung-pounder look. For the light, it kinda reminds me of a mobile operating table. Can you make it a little more industrial?

The PS2 ones are great, although I was very dissapointed with AC2-AA. It was like a crappier Version of AC2. There are a few reasons, but the main one is that there is no Arena, and since you cant re-do old missions, it makes getting money ALOT harder.

Finishing up the mod will be put on hold for a couple of weeks. I just had to have an emergency move and my high speed won't be here for another two weeks. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif Till then I have limited dial-up on a double line that is accidentally being shared with a chatty girl down the street. Actually, the mod is on hold due to my unbearable laziness in finishing the Robot pics. Though I am happy with the end result of a given pic the process of making it is draining and physically painful (somewhat akin to carving out ones own kidney).

Just a side effect of my creative process (or lack thereof).

Hey, thats pretty good. Do you think that you could make a few others to flesh out a race? Which race do you think your bot would be best suited for?

As for the mod, it is still essentially finished but missing appropriate pics ti make it playable (no point in playind a robot mod if you can't see any robots). If I can fill out at least a couple races then I'd like to release it for playtesting to iron out any lingering bugs.

In SE5, you will be able to customize the vehicle hulls themselves. You should be able to make fighter/troop vehicles that can both fight in space and invade planets. How they will be able to effectively land on the planet simultaneously will probably be the issue in SE5...
