Say... ever tried launching mines in a system with random movement???
Talk about realistic minefields! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Yes, I have. Unfortunately, everything in a sector seems to be randomly moved together. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

Hmm, and do the sector contents sometimes move together, so that as time goes one, things tend to accumulate into fewer and fewer sectors, assuming no new sectors have stuff added to them?

P.S. Ooo, I wonder if this is a way to get more than the mine limit in one sector... hmmm... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Possibly. I just remember that I had 3 colony ships get trapped in an Organic Infestation system in a Proportions game (ran out of supplies at the same time in the same sector) and they were never separated. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif

there's a game going where all combat occurs in a system with random movement. apparently, everything is teleported to the destination secter.

Objects in same sector moves always together. I am not toally sure if all other objects in the system move into same direction but I think so. I think I have to check that one.

I tried that mine trick a while ago thinking it would be really funny. The mines don't move the same direction every turn but eventually they do seem to end up in the same sector.

The way random movement works is that a random sector is selected and everything is pulled toward that sector a certain number of sectors.
So, making those random movement systems troublesome in a maximum sense requires that you start the mines with a maximum distance from eachother.
However, sweeping a system such as this is relativly trivial, once some time has passed. Start a few objects out separated form eachother and when they all move together you know which sector to sweep.
The trick is to keep adding mines to the system. If, for example, your home system has this problem, you simply keep producing and launching mines.
And don't worry, your Base Space Yards and Repair Bases will eventually all occupy the same sector, and the ships they build will follow them, so retroseries is still possible. It's just funky!

I must have missed something. What is this random movement you're talking about? Is that an option when you start a new game? I don't remember that, but it has been awhile since I've started a new game. I've been playing a Proportions game off and on for the Last few months.

Here's a question:
If there are enemy mines in the same "wandering" sector as "my" mines, will they set each other off if they meet?

No. Mines are not set off when other objects are moved into the same sector by random movement, whether the mines just moved to that sector or had already been there.
It may also be possible to have more than 100 mines in a single sector, but they will be separate minefields, so... I'm not sure what will happen when you try to sweep them.

It's used in the Organic Infestation systems in SE4 Gold.
