View Full Version : New PBEM/PBW Game: Adamant 011
Fyron

New game using Adamant Mod! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Who wants in?
This will be an alpha test game for Adamant Mod. You can get the mod from its website. The game will likely be processed manually, so as to prevent having to constantly bug Geo to upgrade the mod on PBW. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
The official game forum was located at:
http://www.spaceempires.net/home/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=14
Please do not use the PBW forum, as I will only look at it very, very infrequently.
Make sure to read the Empire Setup file in the Help folder, and follow the guidelines in it. Specifically, you are required to list all advanced racial traits you chose in the Biological Description portion of your empire file. And, don't take more than one basic race trait (Physical, Organic, Magic) and do not take more than one of the Natives trait types.
No duplicate ship sets allowed. Make sure to select the set you are using when you upload your empire file from the drop down list (even if it is a Stock set).
Population trading is disallowed. You may not trade population with other empires, period.
Surrender is disallowed. Therefore, gifting all of your planets, ships, etc. to another empire, which is an attempt to subvert this rule, is also disallowed. If you happen to see other players do this in the game, tell me, and I will investigate the situation. If this rule has been broken, I will upload an old turn to prevent it from happening, and I will consider kicking the offending players from the game.
If any player misses more than 4 turns in a row without any explanation, then I will kick him/her from the game. I have had problems with players in other games not sending any turns in for weeks, and I don't want it to happen here.
Please do not join this game if you plan on having a massive, pre-planned alliance (including, but not limited to, an alliance of 2 players). This game is not designed for that, and I would appreciate it if you do not ruin it for the rest of the players involved. If alliances happen to be started during the game, then that is not a problem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bug exploits are not allowed. They will be listed as they are discovered. If you are unsure of something, please do not hesitate to ask me about it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I would like to try to get this going on a 24 hour turn rate, to facilitate in the beta testing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Out of idle curiosity... At what hour would be the deadline in the case of a 24h game? (With auto-processing on that is) I am asking this weird question to know if I could easily handle a turn each day, while the time here is not quite the same as yours.
At any rate, count me in, I should play this game, bar the unexpected that is. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I don't know. But would it really matter? The hour would be different for any turn that everyone uploads a plr file. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Hmm, I really shouldn't take on another PBEM game, seeing as I'm already in too many in PBW... but who knows how long PBW will be down, maybe it will be down until the end of the quarter... and I'm almost dead in "The Hunt"... OK, count me in! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Most of the people in the first test game hadn't played it much either, esp. since there is not yet any functional AI (soon to be rectified http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif ). And besides, newbies are always able to catch mistakes that veterans miss. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

So what kind of race do you guys want to play as?
Don't forget to visit the mod web page. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif http://adamant.spaceempires.net/ And make sure to check out the few files in the Help folder that I have included in the mod. Suggestions for which topics need help files are not only appreciated, but required. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon6.gif Or not... but still, I am sure there are plenty of confusing aspects that as the author of the mod, I am oblivious too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I will probably take a Magic race with the Religious traits. Yes, I am quite curious to see how these traits play with Adamant. Do not worry though, there are no Talismans in Adamant so you won't need to crush my Empire in the early game. *Smirks*
(By Talisman I meant the Talisman we all know in the vanilla game. There are Talismans (or are they Shrines?) in Adamant, but they merely give system-wide bonuses.)

ACtually... there is still the Religious Talisman, which gives a 30% to hit bonus. And then there is the Fate Talisman, which gives up to a 20% ECM bonus. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Now, whether those are enough to justify 50 kT size (Fate one probably is) will have to be determined by testing. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Hmm, I think I'll be a Physical race with Mechanoids, and maybe Christullrgy... uh, I need to learn how to spell and stop thinking about the religious trait http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif
edit: and I think I'll be something original this time, instead of stealing from MOO2 or Super Mario Bros. or something... yes, I did once play as the "Koopa Klan" http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
edit: probably Hardy Industrialists too, or else Natural Engineers...
edit: or maybe Stoic... geez, there are so many, I'll probably spend 5000 points worth and have to take penalties in everything http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Fyron I am going to combine Adamant with AIC. This way the Adamant AI players will have there own trait like AIC so the AI will be able to handle:
Plagues
Economics
Planetary Bombardment
Finite Economics
Planet Capture
Planet defense
Tactical Fighters
Minefields
Multi-player handicapping
Improved event frequency
AIC Diplomacy
If your assistence is required will you lend a hand?

The HW type doesn't really matter much, just basic race type. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
That now makes it:

Alneyan - Magic religious?
Atrocities - Organic
Ekolis - Physical Mechanoids with Crystallurgy?
se5a
SlamrFest - Organic Psions
Tesco - Fill in the blank
Looks like some magic and physical are needed. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Anybody want to take Crystalline or Temporal? Perhaps a combination of some Religious Ethos and Psionics?

ok, this mod is really messed up, so many graphics files missing, (and im not talking about the planet bmp's either, component pics are missing)
also, the colony module is 3000 kt, while the colony ship is 330kt, almost 10 times too small...
from what i can tell, this mod is FAR FAR from ready... sorry man
u seriously need to fix it up a bit before you can reasonably expect people to play a multiplayer pbm game
if im wrong on these assessments, fill me in

November 19th, 2003, 05:14 AM
You need the Image Mod. http://imagemod.spaceempires.net/ . I believe that the readme and the game website's download page specifies this. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
The colony module has a special mount only available to the 330 kT colony ship that makes it 30 kT. The colony ship was originally 3300 kT, but that cause the Artificial Idioit to think that they were equivalent to very large warships due to the simplicity of the score system. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif So now they are only 330 kT, and require the colony module to be mounted. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif Just select the colony ship, then click on the Mounts button.

you seriously should put this stuff all together and make sure the zip file has all of the proper directory structures so it works when u load it with the se4 gold mod loader http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
most (standard computer knowledge) peeps will not figure this out http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Fyron
November 19th, 2003, 05:26 AM
That is what the readme is for. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif The mod will put everything into the proper folders. You should install the Image Mod into the stock folders.
The entire purpose of the Image Mod is to prevent people from having to download all of the same imags 12 times in every mod that uses them. Putting them in as part of the mod is contrary to that purpose. That, and it would make one monster of a file! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/shock.gif

im also getting real issues with actually starting games...
all the race files complain about missing attributes, (which i know is normally not a big deal) but, in addition, its like locking up when trying to start a game...
ie, at the end of the 100% bar, it just kinda sits there and hangs... lol
you ever have this happen?
i have half a gig of ram... i doubt thats the issue
Fyron
November 19th, 2003, 05:40 AM
The AIs are not yet modded to work, so trying to play against them is not very successful. I don't get the game hanging at the end of starting one though, even with AIs. Hmm... is it hanging at the map generation (game creation) phase or player placement?

9 players is enough. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I concur with Fyron on this one, we should definitively not take 5,000 racial points. It would make things much easier, but where is the challenge in designing your race then? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif And yes, that's definitively much harder than making an Empire in the vanilla game.

sorry, its just that most the games I am in seem to be in some kind of limbo for one reason or another.
my own two games are running slow due to ameracans thanks giving.
ratha is away, and that game is getting interesting.
there are two other games that only need one more player to upload his turn
*glowers at dogscoff and mathias ice*
large game min start has always had slow players, im not doing to well in that game ether, I forgot to reserch on the first turn *doh!*
but this adamant mod looks interesting!

Perhaps you could give the KotH league a try if you do like faster paced games? (Or rated games, or any other one-to-one game) They can go quite fast if both players are available at the same times, I finished a game (50 turns or so) with Slynky in less than two days, while we aren't even in the same time zone. But I digress from the topic.

You can hardly blame people for wanting to spend some time with family in RL over the holidays. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Only one of the games I have hosted has fallen into limbo, and that one was using Proportions mod. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
If you have a game on Auto turns, the waiting on players is a null issue. Players dropping out is still an issue, but there is little you can do with that. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Yeah I thought I might join if there's room. Is it 24h turns? And is this going to be RP game? I like "light RP" games, but "heavy RP" games are too much for me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
Fyron
December 4th, 2003, 11:42 PM
Well... it is a "beta testing" game for Adamant Mod, so RP is not really required... good to do, ofc, but not the emphasis. It will have new turns whenever I can process them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif This is because with frequent updates to the mod being necessary during the testing, so having Geo update the mod every few turns on PBW is not practical. I was thinking more around 48 hours than 24. But if the players play quickly, I can make new turns more quickly.
I don't mind if you join. If you wish to, please create your empire file now, so we can get started as soon as PBW is back. The game settings are on page one.

Which is the Imagemod's real homepage (a bit offtopic but I decided to update my Imagemod because of the Adamant, so there's a little connection http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif )? A number of mirrors are rather outdated. This page is the official home of the image mod and it has the latest files:

The SE.net mirror is the only mirror that is completely up to date.
I really need to update the PHP script on my mirror to display the files better... I think it displays them in order by date or something...

The thing is, the table with the files is dynamically generated via PHP from the files in a specified folder... so it organizes them in whatever order it reads them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif I wonder how to make a dynamic array in PHP... hmm...

Accursed sorting algorithm not working.
Asmala
December 6th, 2003, 12:05 AM
If I remember right all arrays in PHP are dynamic. The sorting isn't difficult, just save the filenames to arrays instead of printing them. Then sort the array, there's lots of build-in sorting functions in PHP.
Fyron
December 6th, 2003, 12:14 AM
That is not the problem... I need to keep track of 5 variables for each file, and then sort that according to the filename or title (and possibly even be able to sort according to any of them). I have been trying to use a class, but can not get anything to work. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon9.gif And I don't want to use a database; all this data comes from reading in files from a directory.

I have a bit of a problem constructing stuff. \A colonizer in this occasion, I already lost a turn because I forgot to put those reactors in, but now it still has only one movement. The colony ship componenets are rock colony (with that fancy mount), neural core, 3x circulatyry system, sefl replicating bla life support, 8 organic engines and 9 organic fusion cells. also a cargo bay and 25 membrane reinforcements.
What am I doing wrong ?
Fyron
December 16th, 2003, 03:23 AM
3 Circulatory Systems? They only need 1. Try adding more engines and fewer extras.
freduk
December 16th, 2003, 04:14 AM
yeah you're right, the other ones need 3 though, but why do my 8 engines not give me the 24 movement points I expected, but only 1 ??
Fyron
December 16th, 2003, 05:04 AM
Because the total standard movement points generated by engines is divided by the Engines Per Move setting of a vehicle. In stock SE4, that setting is at 1 for all of them. Adamant use a QNP system. Colony ships, for example, have an Engines Per Move of 18. So, 24 standard movement points divided by 18 gives 1.5, which rounds down to 1 movement point.

I have left the game. Pretty much like the player before me I didn't feel like learning a totally different type of game, I don't have time to do this. I expected it to be a little bit different, but not totally, now it's like playing SEIV for the very first time.
Hopefully you find a replacement player soon. My race is at the top of the pack qua scores and the race setup is okey I think.

not again!
hell, its not like its that hard to take one turn at a time!
for movement all you need is a calculator.
just multipy the number of engines*suplyusage*movementperturn = suplys used per turn.
(is that how its worked out fyron?)
then you just add your suply storage (or take engines off) to get the range you want.

It was intentional. Note the progression of the defense bonuses of their engines compared to other races'. Also, note that the tech area costs for other races goes 3000 (6 levels), 7500 (6 levels), 10000 (6 levels), 20000 (6 levels), 30000 (6 levels). For magic races, it goes 3000 (6 levels), 7500 (6 levels), 10000 (6 levels), 30000 (3 levels), 30000 (6 levels).
