Greetings from the Cipherious Empire. I have been playing SEIV for quite a while now, and have gotten to the point where I am bored with the AI.
For some reason I've never had any luck trying to get into a PBW game; even one that said it was looking for players. Any suggestions? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

Use the TDM Modpack. This mod uses the standard game with MUCH improved AI. They are challenging.
See the sticky threads for a link.

Welcome to the Boards then. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
If you haven't checked any mods, you could try TDM, which is the vanilla game with much improved AI, Devnull Mod, which also improves the AI but tweaks the game, or the AIC mod, designed to provide a challenging AI. (All three can be found in quite a few places)
As for PBW, I believe you were merely unfortunate. You should have been accepted in a game looking for players without too much problem. I can only advise you to try again, or to be on the lookout for any new game, or perhaps even to try the King of the Hill League (http://koti.mbnet.fi/asmala/koth/) if you like more competitive games and are feeling courageous enough. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif Or likewise, you might give a try to the Rating System (http://se4-gaming.net/) .

Or alternatively, you may have a look at the URL list in the "Important SEIV information and stuff" thread. (Although this list is lacking a few URLs if memory serves right)

I'd like to encourage you to play PBW games. It's a completely different matter to play against humans than a stupid computer (Even the best modded AI is a poor player compared to humans. Or at least I think so, I've never played against AI http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif )

Yes by all means play a PBW game. The only draw back is the time between turns. So more than one game is most often the cure. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

I thank everyone for the responses. Since I posted the question yesterday I have downloaded TDM and am about 100 turns into a new game. The AI is indeed better, as I am into a series of pitched battles with the Colonials for the Qikiltrin system. I will proceed with this game to see whether any new strategies occur to me, then I will see you in PBW. Playing against human competition is always better, like the games of Risk I played as a teenager back in the '60s where we all actually had to sit in the same room. Oooooh, radical man. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I am looking forward to playing with you someday or another on PBW then. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif (Or perhaps even in the King of the Hill League. Who knows?)
And hopefully, being in the same room as the other players is not needed for PBW, as it would be quite a problem in games such as the Galactic Combat series. (where no less than twenty players plot, scheme and conspire) *Smirks*
