View Full Version : All I want for Christmas is a "Promotion"..

David E. Gervais
December 23rd, 2003, 12:11 PM
Ok, people. Here's your chance to log in some Posts to get a nice promotion for Christmas.

The only rule that I will insist on is that nobody be alowed to make double or triple Posts.

So, let's see how many people we can help get promoted.

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

P.S. expect to see a few Posts by me, I have a bit of a ways to go for my next promotion. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

I didn't even realize how the promotion system worked until I went over 400 and got to be a 2nd Lt. Now, how much to I have to post to be a 1st lt?

Speaking of promotions, do any of you know the actual post-count/rank system used here?

I had it marked down way back when I made the rank insignias, but have since lost them. I think my next promotion is at 1800, but It might be 2000 in which case there is very little chance that I'll be promoted before xmas, unless I get an honorary 'Spec-Ops' position. (nudge-nudge wink, wink know what I mean?) LOL

Cheers! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I'm not exactly a mechanic, so I'm lucky if I have the appropriate screwdriver (how come some toys have Phillips screws, while others have straight edge screws?), let alone a pair of pliers. I don't even know where my hammer is; hopefully, I won't need that. Plus the fact that I would like to get some sleep during the night, as my son is an early riser. So I guess it all depends on your definition of fun. But I can imagine his face tomorrow when he sees all of the stuff beneath the tree (thank God I don't have any male dogs anymore, know what I mean?). That will make it all worth it.

Now you can buy all of these pre-made stuff like anything from Star Wars or Harry Potter. That doesn't take any amount of imagination, and I will try not to buy those for my kid. I had great fun with those blocks, and I hope he will to.

Also, there was Lincoln Logs. Those were fun too, and I'm glad to see they're making a come back. And then there was Erector Set. I don't think they make that anymore, but there are a lot of imitators out there with a similar theme.

Santa is coming soon... He is only 8 and a bit hours away...
And Just to rub it in, I'll be enjoying all my new toys while all you 'Northern' people are still just dreaming about what you are going to get. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

That is assuming I've been good this year. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Wait until you're older and/or have children. Then you'll find that while you were sleeping, mom & dad spent half the night putting together your toys. That's what I have to look forward to tonight. Merry Christmas

Thanks Narf. <font size="2" face="sans-serif, arial, verdana">Yeah, it's hard to make 3 good Posts in a day sometimes, especially if Narf is the Last one to post. I think he should go to CA (cheese-eaters anonymous)! Merry Christmas

Well, the correct way to bypass this rule is to go with a quadruple post. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/tongue.gif

Being an RPG character is almost as good. If you die, you can be brought back using magic spells or items... or just reload the Last save game, or start a new one. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif

If you're high level, you can sustain lots and lots of damage, inflict lots of damage, and carry around an absurd amount of stuff with you. (In one of the FF games, I think it was IV, you carry around CABINs, and whenever you need to rest, you just pull one out of your pocket and sleep in it, and you wake up all healed.)

I don't understand this military ranking system. A major is above a lieutenant, and yet a lieutenant general is above a major general... why? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/confused.gif

As to why the real world rank systems do that, I am sure there is a historical reason that makes sense. But I don't know it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

I always thought that Navy ranks would be much more appropriate for Space 4X games. Horatio Hornblower far from his superiors, having to make decisions on his own, etc...

But, to be fair, when/if we ever start sending ships into deep space with humans on them, it'll probably be the Air Force that does it...and they use a modified Army naming system for ranks.

But "Admiral" still sounds better to me than "General"

I wouldn't mind a promotion, but I just got one not too long ago. I'll have to find that list in this thread and see how much longer I have till my next one.

Edit: Hmmm, only 400+ to go...

Well, I was wrong. I didn't spend half the night. I spent most of the night. Most of it was just wrapping presents. The couple of things I had to assemble weren't as bad as I thought they'd be. I didn't go to bed until 4:00 am, and the little guy woke up around 7:15. We bought him a keyboard for kids his age (he's 3), and he almost didn't want to open anything else. But he finally got into opening presents.
