Whenever I try to start SEIV, it starts to load and hangs up at 4%. I have to End Program to get it to unlock. Do any computer gurus out there have any suggestions?

Make sure Path.txt is set to none.

Move the contents of the Space Empires/temp folder to another place. Don't delete them just yet, see if that fixes it first.

If neither of those work I'd be thinking about reinstalling, unless someone else has an idea.

But why would re-installing help? I mean, you'll have to re-install all of the mods too. I don't see how that would cure anything.

Reinstalling would overwrite all the stock files and shouldn't affect the mods at all unless you uninstall first, which I don't suggest without at least trying a reinstall over the top once to see if it works. Of course don't forget to repatch to 1.84 after reinstalling.

Uninstalling a program (especially a game) rarely deletes customized files. I don't know about the case of SE4, but I would imagine that Aaron would not be mean and forcibly delete the folder SE4 was installed into if doing so deletes customized files. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Well, I reinstalled SEIV and patched it.

GOOD NEWS - it loads.

BAD NEWS - there's no text in the buttons on the main menu.

This is a shot in the dark, but I seem to remember having the same kind of problem.

Make sure you have no cd in your cd drive. See if that helps with the locking up at 4%. I realize that you have fixed it, but in case someone else looks at this thread on a search...

Did anybody bother to look at malfador's Troubleshooting page?

Cause the solutions to GW's are listed there, under number 7.

I took it out Last night before I started the mod picker, and I had no problem in starting a game. I'll try that for now to see if it helps.

A quick check revealed that I had a blank disc in my CD-RW drive that I had totally forgotten about.

Duh.

I never have that problem and I almost always have a CD in the drawer. Might I not be experienceing this because I have the music turned off?
