Space Empires 4... Although I have not played any of the previous Versions I love the 4x space games, and this one looks like a winner. Going to wait until the demo is available for download but I have a feeling I will be pre-ordring this one. Does anyone know if it has pbem support?

Congrats on landing this one guys!
I have been playing the demo at work quite a bit (gotta love the IT bus. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif )
I have never played any of the previous SE games but I am 99% sold on this one. Its got that...just one more turn feel for me.
That is NOT a good thing to have in a game at work btw http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif

This looks like a winner.
I was a devout MOO & MOO2 addict. I have been a bit less than captivated by some of the other offering - too much micromanagement, not enough cool stuff.
When the new demo comes out I'll be having a closer look.
The only drawback of an August demo date is that I expect to be spending most of my eveneings with Steel Beasts. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
Good luck with this one.

there is a demo available, from the Malfador site. http://www.malfador.com/se4dwnld.html
It also has a turn limit of 100 turns.

Oh well, I'm one of the hard core Se3 fans...I have played SE3 100 more times than every other game (hey, and still I'm playing!).
Not nice graphics of course, but in my opinion (and not is only my opinion), the better 4x game that I ever saw (well, I loved Moo2 too).
Now, with SE4, I'm not expecting less from MM... for that reason I'll be demanding with SE4!!!
I hope that this time, Aaron can get some reward for his great work! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

For those of you who have not played any of the SE games, you're in for a treat! SE4 is like MOO 2 on steriods. Everything is customizable, and there are automated ministers for just about anything you don't want to do yourself. Of course, you can do everything if you want to.
You develop ships from components, and can save their templates for future games. Same is true for races.
Get the demo, and give it some time. It takes a while to get used to, but that's the price you pay to be able to do soo much!
Enjoy,
Aloid

The one big discouraging thing for me is that the game is going to be outrageously expensive in Canada if the only way to get it is ordering direct from Shrapnel. I figure the end price to be between $95 and $125 depending on shipping method...
Is there any hope that this will be appearing on store shelves???
Thanks,

As far as shipping...
The shipping to Canada is no where NEAR that much, how did you come to that.

No I agree with you.
One reason we started Shrapnel Games was to give developers an alternative to the cutthroat world of mainstream publishing and retail.
However once a certain point of Online sales are done we will be going that route. Nothing is firm yet so go ahead and order up a game http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon12.gif.

I see that many others share my pleasure that SE IV now has Shrapnel as its publisher. This should be a great partership - it's a "niche" game and Shrapnel is a "niche" publisher ("niche" in both cases meaning "for the select players who enjoy specialized games like this that could be lost in the mass marketplace and eaten up by mass-market fees"). I love games like Master of Orion II, Spaceward Ho! IV, and Imperium Galactica II, so I'm looking forward to Space Empires IV. This is very good news and a great addition to Shrapnel's expanding line-up.

PRE-ORDER THIS GAME NOW! Ok, so I downloaded the demo from one of the sites listed in this forum and although I have only gone through about 1/2 of the tutorial I am impressed. The menu/tech tree seems very extensive but overall very intuitive. I especially liked the possibilities that exist with the ship creation menu. Shrapnel should be taking some market share in the Space 4x genre from the impersonal publishers with this one. However, I am curious does anyone know why the info on the Shrapnel page says that a demo will not be available until 7 Aug? Is this a different demo then the one available from Maldafor (sp)? At any rate I can’t wait for the full Version, the graphics are very functional and more importantly I think the game play will be excellent, the multi-player possibilities making it even better.
Lerchey
July 31st, 2000, 04:55 PM
While SE IV is pretty fun as a single person game, it's real value comes in as a PBEM game. You'll be able to do turn based (or realtime!!!) games with up to 20 players. And since so much of the game play is configurable, it's just tooooo cool.
So yeah, the multi-player and PBEM possibilities are what really makes SE IV shine.

Did SEIII have the simultanious turns for email play?
Also, any support for internet play planned or is it email only?

The concept of "simultaneous email play" is sort of nonsensical. By virtue of the way that PBEM works, it cannot be simultaneous. It's turn based.
SE IV does have simultaneous play as an option. However, in my beta testing I did not try this option. I prefer turn based to real-time.
Hope that helps,
John

One of the most incredible things about the game is its massive customizable features. (SE3 was the same way, but now you can customize EVERYTHING)
I hope that MM wins big with this game! This game is incredible and fun to play.
I was looking at some of the other games. Steel Beasts is a M1A2 sim right? Thats what it looks like.
The combat game thing that says "Used by militaries for training" looks interesting but I have to ask which countries?
Grumbling Grognard

The simultanious play option is anything but 'real time'. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif The two are completely different.
In the simult. play option moves are plotted by all players and then they are all executed at the same time. It can make for a much more 'realistic' feel sometimes.
For example, take a fast 'scout' and try to catch him with a slow battle cruiser and in IGOUGO turn based it is a black and white issue. Either you have the MPs to reach him this turn or not... BUT in simultanious movement you don't know, it all depends on the move of the scout. If he 'runs' you will never catch him. And that, IMO can be much more 'realistic'.
Give it a try, 'real-time' it is NOT. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

Hi Again,
Back after a long absence. Imagine my surprise when I get back when I learn among other things that one of my favorite shareware progams is being published by one of my favorite 'independants'.
Yes, SE3 was one of my favorite E4 games along with MOO and MOO2. (enough acronyms? http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif)
Anyway, a few points to make about SE4. I've been playing the demo over the past few days and I find that it's basically an updated Version of SE3 - Not to downrate its quality, it's a very good game, but it's like comparing MOO to MOO2 - improved graphics and gameplay but basically an upgraded Version of an excellent game. Is it a successor to MOO2? Well, in some ways it is and in some ways it isn't. I can't be specific yet, but my feelings about the demo are rather ambiguous. To me SE3 was an improvement on MOO2 in some things but not in others. While SE4 improves some of the things that I felt were lacking in SE3 WRT MOO2, I still don't get an overwhelming sense of that "fuzzy" feeling of rightness. I can't describe it any better than that - I'm sorry - but that's the way it is.
That doesn't stop me from recommending it to others as a game to buy (and one that I will buy - just as I paid for the shareware Version of SE3). It's simply too good a game to pass up and paying for this type of quality ensures that the future of wargaming and true strategy gaming continues.

Yeah right http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
Actually the militaries interest in those products listed (included WDK2K) came without prodding from us so you would have to ask them http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif.
I think SB's and BCT's usefulness as training tools are self evident.

My understanding is that the Air Force is pissed that there aren't any strategy simulations of modern day air combat. They think that with some changes 2K may work. Of course they may change their mind after eval, but that's my understanding...
