I have noticed that at times my bonuses in characteristics seem to to be working in reverse. Case in point, in a game that I am now playing against another RL person I have maitenance set to impressive, yet I am struggling with minerals each turn. I set up a game to run with Maitenance set to 100% and not above, and I have many more minerals per turn with more ships and less mineral producing worlds.
Also the same can be said about Intel / research and many other settings in the Characteristics. I think that they are working in reverse.
It sure as hell seems like they are. I am saving my game files to verify this later.

Please make savegame files where you can verify this available ASAP. I do not think any of them are working in reverse myself, so please prove me wrong. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

They sure feel as if they are working against me that is for damn sure.
It like having a ball an chain tied to your feet, you just can't get ahead even with the bonuses, its like they are working in reverse.

But they are not. Just made a game with a race that has 110 Maint Apt and 130 Minerals Apt.
HW: 5 mineral miners, on 98% value planet
6664 minerals production
5*800 = 4000
4000*.98 = 3920
30% bonus from pop, 10% from happiness
So, 130+30+10 = 170
70% bonus
3920*1.7=6664
The math leads to the same value generated in-game.
Next I built an escort with 3 supply pods and 6 ion engines I. Minerals cost is 3450.
Base maint would be 3450*.25 = 863
The game has me pay 517 for it.
110 Maint Apt.
So, that makes 15% base maint rate.
3450*.15 = 517.5
Conclusion: seems to be working fine to me.

I am telling you Fyron, it feels as if my feet are in glue.... I can't get ahead to save my empire.

Maybe it would comfort you to know that most of the best players run mineral deficits for a (relatively) long time... those initial resources help a lot. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

and those numbers just made my brain hurt!

Well that would explain why you seem to think your bonuses are acting in reverse, and this is not the first time you have claimed such things. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon12.gif

Maybe you are misunderstanding how the maintenance ability works and using it in reverse? Try the other way once. Give yourself a 'maintenance penalty' and see how that looks.

Most likely its just a game to game difference in the amount of planets with good mineral values.

Man I do not know what I am doing wrong, I ma loosing this game hand over fist.
I just lost a fleet of 76 ships to his fleet of 60. He just had better ships. I took out two of his 5 starting planets though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Seriously, it's very easy to check that your maintanance is all right. Check the initial cost, the maintanance cost (it's there every time you click on the ship) and your bonuses (click on abilities). IIRC; with 110% to maintanace you should pay 15% of initial cost (25% base value - 10 %).
A mistake I often see in KOTH and other games is that people maintain large fleets of old/inferior/usless ships, forgetting that they pay the full cost of the ship in maintanance each 4-7 turns.

Thanks primitive, I will keep that in mind for KOTH. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon7.gif
Have you ever run into a KOTH game where one player was boxed in by a super massive black holes?
