Is max # of facilities directly proportional to max population?

quick answer: nope.

long answer: population and facility max is determined by planet type and domed/undomed status. neither can be changed, outside of text editing. although there is a facility that can give you more cargo spaces.

Not precisely, but they are closely related.
See planetsize.txt for specific numbers.

Ack, too slow by seconds!

Hmm, not quite. It works like this:

pop 100 m 1 fac
pop 200 m 2 fac
pop 300 m 3 fac
pop 400 m 4 fac
pop 500 m 5 fac
pop 1000m 10 fac
pop 2000m 15 fac
pop 4000m 20 fac
pop 8000m 25 fac

If you took advanced storage techniques multiply both pop and fac by 1.2 and round down the facilities.

Some mods give even larger planets and, as i recall, things get even more out of whack.

Stupid code blocks always cost me that extra minute or two.

Interesting. Seems arbitrary.

Where's 6, 7, 8, and 9 facilities!?

Fyron

It is actually not arbitrary at all... breatheable planets have 5 facilities per size class. Domed colonies have 1/5 the space for everything.

Fyron even I know there is not space for everything at Domed colonies.

Non-Breathable 100M - 1 facility
Breathable 100M - 5 facility

etc..
etc..

Unless I am mistaken that is the way it all works...

EDIT:= Or both.
Or not?

However, I can see how this can be misunderstood.

Expanding a little further on what JLS posted:

For tiny through huge planets, the facilities have a ratio of 1/5 (between domed and undomed).

For tiny and small worlds, the pop and cargo ratio is also 1/5.

For Medium worlds, the pop and cargo ratio is 3/20.

For large worlds the pop and cargo ratio is 1/10.

For Huge worlds the pop and cargo ratio is 1/16.

And for Ringwolrds and Sphereworlds, all three ratios are 1/2.
